Amuka-Pemu turned 90 on June 13.
The dinner party held at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos, with politicians, captains of industry, and traditional rulers in attendance.
Fondly known as Uncle Sam, Amuka-Pemu began his career at the Daily Times. He subsequently co-founded The Punch newspaper alongside the late Olu Aboderin, a respected accountant.
In 1984, Amuka-Pemu went on to establish Vanguard newspaper, further solidifying his legacy as a pioneering figure in Nigerian journalism.
Among those present were Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun; Tsola Emiko, Olu of Warri; Babatunde Fashola, former governor of Lagos; Segun Osoba, veteran journalist and former governor of Ogun state; Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party in 2023 and former governor of Anambra; Mohammed Idris, minister of information and national orientation.
Others were Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to President Bola Tinubu on information and strategy; Dele Momodu, publisher of Ovation; Nduka Obaigbena, chairman of ThisDay and Arise media group; James Ibori, former governor of Delta state; Ben Murray-Bruce, former senator representing Bayelsa East; Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka; Donald Duke, former governor of Cross River.
Jim Ovia, chairman of Zenith Bank; Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Tonye Cole, co-founder of Sahara Group; Dare Art Alade, Nigerian musician and showbiz entrepreneur; Reuben Abati, former presidential spokesperson; and Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM); were also at the event.
