Emir of Zazzau Addresses Emirate Crisis, Ex-Waziri's Status

The Emir of Zazzau, Ambassador Ahmad Bamalli, has publicly addressed the ongoing Zazzau Emirate crisis, revealing that the official whose appointment was terminated had absconded from duty seven months prior to his removal. Emir Bamalli shared this during a courtesy visit from Bashir Rabe-Mani, Kaduna Zonal Manager of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), and Yusuf Jidda, Kaduna Regional Manager of the Media Trust Group, in Zaria. He explained that the former Wazirin Zazzau, Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad-Aminu, had been absent for an extended period before the state government officially sacked him.

According to the Emir, the Zazzau Emirate council formed a delegation, led by Alhaji Nuhu Aliyu-Magaji (Galadiman Zazzau), to meet with Muhammad-Aminu regarding his absence. The former Waziri reportedly informed the delegation of his intention to return to duty but failed to do so. After subsequent attempts to reach him proved futile, Emir Bamalli formally reported the matter to the state government, which ultimately led to the termination of the Waziri's appointment. The Emir lamented that a section of the media had misrepresented the situation, portraying the ex-Waziri as a victim of victimization or a witch-hunt.

Emir Bamalli also delved into the controversial 2020 selection process for the new Emir of Zazzau. Despite acknowledging that none of the kingmakers voted for him and that there were anomalies in the process, he expressed satisfaction with their actions. He urged the media to investigate the details of the selection process, which took place at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria. The process was overseen by the then Secretary to the State Government (SSG) of Kaduna State, now Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Abbas, with the Commissioner of Police and Director of SSS serving as observers.

During the selection at ABU, the former Waziri allegedly approached the SSG with a list of three nominees for the throne. However, the SSG, acting as an observer to ensure due process and transparency, questioned how the three names and their scores were determined, to which the former Waziri offered no tangible explanation. The kingmakers had initially rated Alhaji Bashir Aminu (Iyan Zazzau) highest with 89 marks, followed by Alhaji Munir Jafaru (Yariman Zazzau) with 87. Emir Bamalli himself was rated third with 62 marks, purportedly due to lacking a national honour and district headship, while Alhaji Aminu Shehu Idris (Turakin Zazzau) scored 53.

Emir Bamalli, who was serving as an Ambassador in Thailand and Myanmar at the time and had previously served as Magajin Garin Zazzau for 19 years, questioned the relevance of national honour and district headship as criteria, stating that the kingmakers scored him zero on these points. To his dismay, the kingmakers excluded his name and submitted the names of the late Bashir Aminu, Munir Jafaru, and Alhaji Aminu Shehu-Idris (who was fourth on the list). He further alleged that his initial application for the throne was discarded by the former Waziri, who also refused to collect applications from his nephew, the Bunun Zazzau, and other applicants, asserting that records exist to verify these claims.

NAN recalls that Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad-Aminu had petitioned the Kaduna State House of Assembly to reverse Ambassador Ahmad Bamalli's appointment as the 19th Emir of Zazzau, following his unsuccessful legal challenges at both the Kaduna State High Court and the Court of Appeal, Kaduna Division.
