NDLEA Seizes Drugs, Including Cannabis Disguised as Green Tea, at Lagos Airport

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully intercepted a significant consignment of illicit drugs at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos. On Thursday, June 5th, 2025, no fewer than 66 parcels of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, weighing a total of 62.20 kilograms, were seized. The drugs were cleverly disguised as green tea and had arrived from Thailand via the United Arab Emirates on an Emirates Airlines flight on May 11th. This seizure was the culmination of an operation based on credible intelligence, which led to the NDLEA watch-listing the shipment and maintaining surveillance for over three weeks before conducting a joint examination with other stakeholders.

In other successful operations within Lagos, NDLEA operatives on Monday, June 2nd, intercepted a substantial 1,665 kilograms of skunk, another strain of cannabis, along the Lekki-Ajah expressway. Two suspects, Gidado Abdulrasaq Ayinde and Obanla Oluwafemi, were promptly arrested in connection with this seizure.

The agency's efforts also yielded significant results in Edo State. On Tuesday, June 3rd, operatives arrested 45-year-old Atari Israel along Auchi road. He was found transporting 9 kilograms of Loud concealed within the spare tyre compartment of an Audi station wagon bearing the registration AAA 975 XU. On the same day, in the Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, two young women, Favour Joy and Joy Igwe, were apprehended. A search led to the recovery of a substantial quantity of illicit substances from them, including 106.57 kilograms of skunk, 1 kilogram of Loud, 800 grams of Colorado, and 302 grams of methamphetamine, amounting to a total of 108.67 kilograms of drugs.

Further operations in Kaduna State on Tuesday, June 3rd, resulted in multiple arrests. Goodluck Nnaemeka, a 29-year-old, was arrested by operatives on patrol along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway. He was found in possession of 612 bottles of codeine-based syrup and 2,970 pills of flunitrazepam. Additionally, on the same day, a 52-year-old wanted drug dealer, Kabiru Musa, also known as KB, was apprehended at Kurmin Mashi. This arrest followed an earlier operation where 25.7 kilograms of skunk were recovered from his known base.

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), commended the officers and men of the MMIA, Lagos, Kaduna, and Edo Commands for the arrests and seizures made over the past week. He also extended his praise to their counterparts in all commands across the country for their dedication to pursuing a fair balance between drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.
