Lagos Government Seals Building in Okota/Ago Palace Way Area Due to Illegal Sewage Discharge

The Lagos State Government has taken decisive action against environmental pollution by sealing a residential property located at No. 59, Ajoke Okusanya Street, off Ago Palace Way in Okota. This enforcement operation, carried out on Saturday, June 14, 2025, by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) under the supervision of the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, followed the discovery that raw sewage was being illegally discharged from a septic tank directly into the public drainage system.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, publicly condemned the act, describing it as a grave violation of environmental laws and a significant public health hazard. Through posts on his official X handle, Wahab emphasized that the government maintains a zero-tolerance stance on such conduct, especially given the severe health risks associated with the contamination of water sources and the potential for triggering disease outbreaks. The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the health of residents and ensuring a healthy and sustainable environment across the state.

The case garnered widespread public attention after a concerned resident recorded and shared a video on the social media platform X. The video captured sewage being funneled from the residential compound into an adjacent gutter via a hose, prompting the resident to tag Commissioner Wahab in the post. This immediate public reporting led to swift governmental intervention, underscoring the government’s resolve to identify and sanction individuals and entities who breach environmental safety standards.

Officials of the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office conducted surveillance and confirmed reports that occupants of the building were actively pumping untreated effluent directly from their septic tank into the surrounding environment. This illegal discharge of wastewater poses serious risks to public health and safety, reinforcing the government’s determination to clamp down on perpetrators of such acts as part of broader efforts to maintain a clean and safe living environment in Lagos State.
