Perplexity Launches Powerful New AI Computer to Drive Its Multi-Model Strategy
Perplexity has introduced Perplexity Computer, a powerful new agentic tool available exclusively to subscribers of its highest tier, Perplexity Max, priced at $200 per month.
Designed as a cloud-based computer user agent, the system can autonomously execute complex workflows by coordinating 19 different AI models and even creating specialized subagents for specific tasks.
It can gather statistical, financial, or legal information, analyze the data, and present results as polished websites or visualizations.
By operating entirely in the cloud, Perplexity Computer also aims to reduce some of the security risks commonly associated with agent-based AI tools.
This launch represents a major step in Perplexity’s evolution from its origins as an AI-powered answer engine and the creator of the Comet web browser.
Despite canceling an early press demonstration due to technical flaws, company executives emphasized that the tool reflects Perplexity’s growing role in shaping the AI ecosystem.
They noted that major competitors, including Google, have begun adopting features similar to Perplexity’s earlier innovations, reinforcing both the company’s influence and the intensifying competition in the space.
Perplexity has also made a strategic shift toward a more specialized and revenue-focused business model.
After abandoning its advertising arm to preserve user trust, the company is now targeting enterprise clients and high-value users involved in critical research and decision-making.
Rather than pursuing mass adoption, executives are prioritizing revenue growth and positioning Perplexity as a premium, boutique AI service.
This approach contrasts sharply with competitors like OpenAI, which claims hundreds of millions of weekly users, but aligns with Perplexity’s focus on delivering high-impact, high-margin solutions.
Technologically, Perplexity is advancing its multi-model strategy by developing its own AI-optimized search infrastructure and automatically selecting the best language model for each task.
Its system can assign different models for coding, research, or content creation, and users can also query multiple models simultaneously through its Model Council feature.
Looking ahead, the company plans to expand its Comet browser to iOS and host its Ask developer conference to encourage broader API adoption.
Despite some user complaints about rate limits, Perplexity remains confident in its subscription-driven model and its vision of orchestrating multiple specialized AI systems to deliver faster, more accurate results.
