BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WMBB) – Panama City now transformed into a winter wonderland, parts of the city saw upwards of five inches of snow, which is a new record.

Crews working late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, even turning bulldozers into makeshift snow plows to help clear roads. City leaders are happy with the results.

“Panama city is doing really good right now. Our streets crews worked all night, scraping as you and I just were talking about down here on some of the main roads in and out of the city, in and out of Downtown in St. Andrews around our hospitals, to try to just get as much of the the snow and the ice and the buildup off of the roads so that they could then jump on it again today,” Panama City, City Manager Jonathan Hayes said.

With temperatures rising in the late morning and early afternoons, some of the snow and ice on the roadways began to melt, exposing other issues for crews to work on.

“We are gonna see more water leaks show themselves because of the freeze last night, the freeze that we have when you see the happening. So really our utility crews are going to rest and recharge their batteries because the real work for them is gonna begin tomorrow when we actually come out of this,” Hayes said

The message from City leaders in Panama City to their residents rings true to all those living across the panhandle, staying your homes and off the roads.

“There is when the temperatures drop this evening, we’re gonna be down into the low 20s, maybe even the upper teens tonight. We’re going to see the roads freeze again. So along with the asks from the county officials and the sheriff, the city is asking people to please stay home, stay off the roads, and hopefully about 24 hours from now, middle of Thursday, we’ll see the situation start to improving all the roads again,” Hayes added.
