Outcry for Justice: Abuja Nurse Murdered, Union Demands Action

The Nigerian healthcare community has been plunged into grief and outrage following the brutal murder of Nurse Chinemerem Chukwumeziem (also known as Chuwumezie or Pascalina Chuwumeziem) of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja. The tragic incident, which occurred on January 3, saw Nurse Chukwumeziem fall victim to suspected “one-chance” criminals after completing her afternoon shift and boarding public transport to return home. Her lifeless body was discovered by the roadside on the morning of January 4 and subsequently deposited at the FMC Jabi mortuary.
The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, Federal Health Institutions Sector (NANNM-FHI), expressed profound heartbreak over the killing. In a statement, National Secretary Enya Osinachi condemned the act, highlighting that Nurse Chukwumeziem had devotedly cared for patients before her untimely death. Osinachi underscored that nurses are not merely essential caregivers but also primary breadwinners, asserting that such a loss impacts patients, morale, and public trust. The NANNM-FHI described the killing as a grim reflection of worsening insecurity threatening healthcare workers who often endure long shifts and unsafe commutes across Nigerian cities.
In solidarity with the victim’s family and colleagues, NANNM-FHI stressed that mere sympathy is insufficient without concrete government measures. The association urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation, arrest the perpetrators, and significantly improve security around hospitals and transit routes. They also called for the provision of staff transport, formal recognition of nurses as “high-risk” essential workers through policy reforms, adequate funding, and law enforcement. Furthermore, the body demanded improved hazard allowances, life insurance, welfare support for families, and regular security risk assessments to prevent further loss of lives within the health sector.
Reacting to the incident, the Elegant Nurses Forum also condemned the killing and the prevailing state of insecurity in the country. In a statement signed by Nurse Thomas Olamide, the forum criticized the government for its perceived failure to protect citizens, including health workers who are required to work late hours and night shifts without adequate protection during their commutes. The forum called for an investigation into the killing, the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, government-funded shuttle services for workers in major institutions, improved security around hospitals and major routes, and the formal recognition of health workers as high-risk essential workers. The group also urged action from trade unions and accountability from government officials responsible for internal security.
The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, echoed the sentiments of sorrow, outrage, and total condemnation. Chairman Jama D. Medan confirmed the brutal killing of their innocent young colleague, emphasizing her selfless service to humanity. The council called upon the entire security architecture in the FCT, including the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to immediately conduct a thorough, transparent, and professional investigation to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice without delay.
The NANNM FCT Council highlighted that the continued harassment and attacks on nurses expose the alarming level of insecurity faced daily by healthcare workers, particularly during their commutes. They passionately stated, “Our lives are no longer safe. Nurses leave their homes daily to save lives, yet many are uncertain of returning alive to their families.” The council strongly urged the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to urgently strengthen security around all hospitals in the FCT and at major junctions where healthcare workers board vehicles, especially during early morning and late-night shifts. They further advocated for the provision of safe and organized transportation for nurses. Extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the management of FMC Jabi, the council demanded justice for their fallen colleague and urgent government intervention to guarantee the safety and security of all nurses and healthcare workers in the Federal Capital Territory, warning that anything less would further endanger nurses and erode public confidence in the nation’s security system.
