Outcry Erupts: Group Slams Presidential Pardons for Convicted Criminals

The Rescue Movement for New Nigeria (RMNN) has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s decision to grant pardons to individuals convicted of various crimes, including drug trafficking and murder. In a statement released on Wednesday, the group articulated its “deep disappointment and grave concern” over these actions, characterizing them as a significant betrayal of the Nigerian state.
Faduri Oluwadare Joseph (Fadojoe), the leader of RMNN and a former Labour Party presidential aspirant, warned that such pardons pose a severe threat to national security, erode public trust, and undermine the moral integrity of the nation. He emphasized that while these actions might be framed as acts of mercy or reconciliation, their consequences are detrimental, risking a reversal of progress made in peace, justice, and accountability.
The RMNN further argued that releasing individuals who have shown a blatant disregard for human life and the rule of law could embolden criminal networks. This, in turn, could severely demoralize the security forces who consistently put their lives at risk to protect Nigerian citizens. The group firmly stated that “Mercy must never come at the expense of justice or public safety,” urging that the President’s constitutional powers to grant clemency be exercised with utmost transparency, fairness, and a clear alignment with national interest.
In light of these concerns, the RMNN called upon the federal government to undertake a comprehensive review and reform of the criteria and transparency mechanisms surrounding the clemency process. They stressed that all future decisions regarding pardons must be firmly rooted in justice and must reflect the collective will of the Nigerian people. The statement concluded by reinforcing that “Forgiveness and reconciliation are noble virtues,” but must never compromise justice and accountability, as the strength of any democracy relies on its commitment to the rule of law and the sanctity of human life. The RMNN asserted, “The Nation Deserves Better,” affirming its ongoing advocacy for peace, justice, and good governance in Nigeria.
