Orlando Pirates Roar to Life: New Signings, Training, & Season Opener Frenzy!

Orlando Pirates are making a robust statement ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season, fortifying their squad with nine new signings as they prepare to defend their league title. The Buccaneers will kick off their campaign against newly-promoted Milford FC at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, 1 August, at 15:00, with tickets now officially on sale.

The club's transfer strategy has focused on balancing youth, potential, and immediate quality, earning an overall transfer window rating of 8.5. This approach highlights a commitment to strengthening multiple positions and building for the future rather than solely chasing headline-grabbing names. Among the key arrivals are players with proven top-flight pedigree and exciting prospects.

New signings and their impact, rated out of 10, include: Neo Rapoo (8.5), a standout defender from Siwelele FC, valued for his consistency, energy, and versatility. Aphiwe Baliti (7.5) is a promising addition who has since returned to Siwelele FC on loan. Matome Mmolai (7) from Leicesterford City FC is an investment for the future, while Bohlale Ngwato (8), a highly regarded 20-year-old, underscores the club’s focus on long-term development. Sbangani Zulu (7.5), a solid acquisition from Richards Bay, adds crucial depth and competition. Ghampani Lungu (8) is an intriguing signing with the quality to make an immediate impact, potentially becoming one of the window’s bargains. Mthetheleli Mthiyane (7) is another player offering potential and squad depth. Sebastian Pedersen (8.5), the Norwegian striker from Sogndal, stands out as a marquee signing, bringing a new dimension to the attack with his clinical finishing. Fans have even playfully dubbed him “The Temu Haaland.” Thapelo Mokobodi (8), the most recent acquisition from Stellenbosch FC, is a midfielder who will add energy and composure to the middle of the park.

The squad is already taking shape, with 35 players spotted at recent training sessions. This group included several new faces like Nkosikhona Ndaba, Neo Rapoo, Mtheleleli Mthiyane, Matome Mmolai, Bohlale Ngwato, and Ghampani Lungu. Notably, no goalkeepers were part of this specific session, which focused entirely on outfield players. Five players from the club’s DStv Diski Challenge reserve side—Cristian Derbyshire, Simphiwe Masilela, Mpho Padima, Reece Braithwaite, and Mpho Mphekgoane—have also been promoted to the senior squad. Sebastian Pedersen and Thapelo Mokobodi are expected to join the squad for training on Thursday, completing their moves to the Soweto giants.

While the squad has been aggressively strengthened, the Buccaneers have also faced some departures. Star winger Relebohile Mofokeng has moved to Europe, and fans expressed disappointment over the exit of Thabiso Sesane, a 26-year-old who endured significant injury issues, including a tendon problem that sidelined him for the entire 2025-26 season. Despite rumours, Oswin Appollis appears to be staying put, while the arrival of Pedersen sparks fan discussions about its implications for Evidence Makgopa’s playing time.

The club has officially opened ticket sales for the season opener against Milford FC. Tickets are priced at R100 each and are available exclusively through Open Tickets, with only digital tickets being issued for the season. Supporters are encouraged to fill the stands, with season tickets and SuperSuite season tickets also available for enhanced match-day experiences. Orlando Pirates, fresh off lifting the Betway Premiership title last season, are hoping for a strong turnout to kick off what they anticipate will be another memorable campaign.
