OPIT Offers Flexible, Accredited AI Degrees to African Professionals

Published 5 hours ago3 minute read

As global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) skills surges, the Open Institute of Technology (OPIT), a Malta-based online university, has declared its readiness to train the next generation of African AI champions.

Backed by a mission to deliver high-quality, accessible tech education, OPIT is positioning itself as a vital partner in Africa’s digital transformation.

The announcement comes on the heels of the 2025 LinkedIn Future of Work Report, which revealed that AI-related job postings grew by 38% between 2020 and 2024—making AI one of the fastest-growing job sectors globally. Recognising this growth and the skills gap it presents, OPIT is extending its reach to professionals across the continent, offering accredited Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Digital Business.

Speaking from Milan, OPIT founder Riccardo Ocleppo said, “From the beginning, our mission has been to offer a curriculum that meets the world’s most urgent demand in tech skills by focusing on their applications in the real world. With a faculty of 45 international professors and students from 78 countries, we are proud to support Africa’s fast-growing tech ecosystems.”

OPIT’s expansion aligns with the African Union’s Continental AI Strategy, which emphasises people-centric development, AI infrastructure, and education. The AU strategy outlines the need for investment in AI skills, broadband, data centers, and talent, to equip member states for an increasingly AI-driven future.

In September 2024, Nairobi-based IT professional Watson Ndethi enrolled in OPIT’s MSc in Responsible Artificial Intelligence. With over a decade of industry experience, Watson cited OPIT’s flexible learning model as a game-changer.

“OPIT’s blended model combines optional weekly live sessions with expertly curated asynchronous study materials, allowing you to fit a high-quality, accredited graduate program into your already demanding work schedule. This approach provides a valuable option for working professionals,” he said.

OPIT’s impact on Africa’s AI landscape is already evident. With a growing number of students from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Rwanda, and South Africa, the institution’s student base reflects the continent’s hunger for relevant, future-focused education. In March 2025, OPIT celebrated its first-ever graduation, with 40 students from six continents completing its flagship MSc in Applied Data Science and AI.

According to Ocleppo, the ability to study remotely while continuing meaningful work in home countries makes OPIT especially attractive to African professionals.

“In 2025, we’re excited to welcome more students from leading innovation hubs such as Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa, Egypt, and Rwanda. The ability to study remotely while continuing meaningful work at home makes OPIT a powerful option for working professionals,” he said.

With a student-first approach, OPIT offers 24/7 access to tutors, live masterclasses, interactive exercises, and high-quality digital content. All courses are EU-accredited and designed to bridge the gap between theory and practice—ensuring graduates are both academically sound and industry-ready.

For a continent racing to harness AI for agriculture, education, climate resilience, and healthcare, OPIT’s model offers a timely, scalable solution. And for Africa’s aspiring tech leaders, it presents a chance to compete—and lead—on the global stage. More information on OPIT’s programs can be accessed at www.opit.com.
