One Superman Scene Has Convinced Me That James Gunn's Plan for a Superhero Spinoff Series Is a Home Run
James Gunn‘s Superman is receiving a lot of praise from DC fans, and not just because of David Corenswet. That’s right, it’s Mister Terrific who has stolen the spotlight this time, with one scene that makes it quite obvious why he definitely deserves his own show. In the movie, when Superman is trapped in a pocket universe by Lex Luthor, it’s Mister Terrific, played by Edi Gathegi, who jumps into action.
For this, he joins forces with Lois Lane and uses his sharp mind and, of course, cool gadgets to pull off a daring rescue. This sequence shows just how important and capable he is, and after watching, it’s quite easy for me to see why James Gunn sees spinoff potential. Let’s dive deeper!

James Gunn is shaking up the DC Universe, and it looks like he might have found his new hero. That’s right, I was absolutely thrilled to watch David Corenswet as the iconic Superman, but now the spotlight is on Mister Terrific. After making a bold impression in the recently released Superman, the character played by Edi Gathegi could now be heading for his own show, as per The Wall Street Journal.
This report mentions that Gunn is exploring a spinoff series based on characters introduced in the movie. And yes, Mister Terrific is said to be a front runner in that list. The movie has already stirred a good conversation among fans, who are loving the fresh faces in the superhero lineup. Among them, Mister Terrific definitely stands out with his powers and abilities.
In the comics, Michael Holt (civilian identity of Mister Terrific) is known as the third smartest man (after Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne) in the DCU, with 14 PhDs, and has mastered advanced tech like T-Spheres. While the original Mister Terrific, Terry Sloane, debuted in the 1940s, it’s Holt’s modern version that truly connects with today’s audience.
In Superman as well, he wasn’t just a background character and played a significant role alongside Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane. So, Gunn’s decision to give him real screen time and not just a quick cameo shows that there are bigger plans ahead.
If the spinoff moves forward, then it could absolutely be one of DC’s most refreshing stories yet. And with Gunn focused on revamping the DCU, this could be a perfect time for a solo spotlight.

James Gunn is not making superhero movies and shows for fun; he’s carefully planning every move in the DCU. In his plan, he’s not just thinking about big names like Superman and Batman, but he’s also focusing on the lesser-known heroes. That’s when Mister Terrific comes into the picture with his recent winning performance in Superman.
Now, with talks of a possible spinoff in the picture, Gunn is planning to focus on stories that go beyond the main movies to build out the universe. Moreover, Peacemaker Season 2 is also said to connect directly to Superman and future events. Projects like Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface show that Gunn is building a colorful universe, filled with more grounded characters and even darker stories.
What makes all of this work perfectly is Gunn’s patience, as he wants each project to stand on its own and still be part of the bigger picture. Projects only move ahead when the script is strong. For him, the story is more important than speed. Even though there’s a six-year roadmap, he wants each project to be perfect.
Slowly but steadily, James Gunn is building a world where each and every character matters, and it looks like Mister Terrific is next on his radar.
