Omo-Agege Addresses APC Defection Amid Oborevwori's Absence

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been met with varied reactions and significant political maneuvering. Oborevwori, who won the 2023 election under the PDP, cited several factors for his switch, with he, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and the entire PDP structure in Delta stating they are collapsing into the APC, viewing it as a more advantageous platform for the oil-rich state.
Stella Okotete, the Executive Director (Business Development) of NEXIM Bank and former APC National Woman Leader, expressed enthusiasm over Oborevwori's defection. She believes this move, along with the inclusion of other prominent PDP leaders such as Okowa, will fortify the party and improve its prospects for success, particularly in the South-South geopolitical zone. Festus Keyamo, Olorogun Otega Emerhor, Elder Godsday Orubebe, and Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas have also welcomed the governor's decision.
Former Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege, Oborevwori's longtime political rival and the one who lost the 2023 governorship election to Oborevwori, has broken his silence, directing all organs of the Delta APC to welcome the new entrants. In a statement, Omo-Agege assured that the party's national leadership is managing the political realignment to protect APC's interests in Delta State. Despite previously rejecting overtures from Oborevwori, Omo-Agege now calls for unity within the Delta APC.
Analysts suggest that Oborevwori's defection strengthens his political position ahead of 2027 and grants him de facto leadership of the Delta APC, a role previously held by Omo-Agege. This move potentially corners Omo-Agege politically, possibly impacting his chances for the 2027 governorship candidacy. However, Omo-Agege's recent statement emphasizes unity and welcomes the new members.
Omo-Agege stated, "The leadership of the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress warmly welcomes His Excellency, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and all leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party into the All Progressives Congress... This historic move underscores the success of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in driving growth and development in our country." He also urged all APC ward and local government executives to mobilize for a reception rally in Asaba on April 28, 2025.
