Highlights from the 17th Headies Awards

The 17th Headies Awards, themed 'Back To Base,' took place in Lagos, Nigeria, celebrating the brightest stars in the music industry. Key figures like Davido, Don Jazzy, and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu graced the event. Tanzanian singer Juma Jux, along with his wife Priscilla Ojo, and the family of the late Mohbad were also in attendance. The event included performances and emotional moments, particularly for Mohbad's family who accepted an award on his behalf.

Several awards were presented, recognizing various talents in the Nigerian and African music scene. Zerry DL claimed the Rookie of the Year award, while Davido was named Digital Artiste of the Year. Rema took home Afrobeats Album of the Year for 'HEIS,' and Tems won Best Recording of the Year for her song 'Burning,' featured on her album 'Born in the Wild'. Tems’ mother accepted the award on her behalf. Odumodublvck was crowned the Next Rated Artist, beating out fellow nominees. Special Recognition Awards were given to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Alex Okosi, and Amaju Pinnick.

Other notable winners included Lojay for Best Vocal Performance (Male) with “Billions”, Liya for Best Vocal Performance (Female) with “I’m Done”, and Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma (Qing Madi) for Songwriter of the Year with “Vision”. London won Producer of the Year for “OZEBA”, and Director Pink won Music Video of the Year for “EGWU”. Flavour’s “Big Baller” won Afrobeats Single of the Year, while “Egwu” by Chike & Mohbad won Headies’ Viewers’ Choice. Juma Jux also won Best East African Artiste of the Year.

The Headies Awards, since its inception in 2006, has grown into a respected music award platform in Nigeria. This year includes two editions, with the 18th edition scheduled for December to compensate for the absence of the awards in 2024. Performances and appearances from artists like Cubana Chief Priest added to the event's excitement, even during pre-events. The awards continue to celebrate and recognize outstanding achievements in the Nigerian music industry.
