Federal Government Issues Warning About Cyber-Slavery Threats

The Nigerian federal government has issued a warning regarding the increasing threat of cyber-slavery in West Africa. This concern was communicated through a statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, via the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. The statement highlights a disturbing trend where Nigerian citizens, particularly vulnerable youths and underage teenagers, are being targeted.

These young individuals are often enticed with deceptive promises of high-paying job opportunities abroad, especially in the realm of cryptocurrency-related activities. However, the reality is that they are trafficked into elaborate scam operations and forced to work in criminal call centers, infamously known as ‘419 cyber-scam factories.’ These victims are subjected to coercive and inhumane conditions, where they are compelled to send numerous fraudulent emails, text messages, and make deceptive calls aimed at defrauding unsuspecting individuals across the globe.

The statement referenced a recent event in Accra, Ghana, where the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) rescued and detained a group of Nigerians who were coerced into participating in cybercrime activities under harsh conditions. This occurrence underscores the grave exploitation and abuse that are inherent in such cybercrime operations. It also emphasizes the pressing need for greater efforts to dismantle these multi-billion dollar criminal networks and to mitigate the susceptibility of potential victims.

Nigerians, especially youths and their parents, are urged to exercise extreme caution when considering job offers, particularly those promising quick wealth, opportunities for overseas travel, or remote work involving cryptocurrencies. Individuals are advised to verify all employment offers through official channels and to promptly report any suspicious cases to the relevant authorities for thorough investigation and action.

The government is actively collaborating with regional partners, law enforcement agencies, and international organizations to combat this heinous crime, rescue victims, and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice. In a related event, the Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has condemned a recent attack on Nigerians in South Africa, where seven individuals were brutally assaulted and one was kidnapped.
