Published 1 week ago1 minute read

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has announced a rise in romance scams.

Speaking at the launch of a fraud reporting campaign in partnership with the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency (NCA UK), EOCO’s Director of Administration, Edward Cudjoe, revealed that the office is currently investigating 107 cases.

He emphasised EOCO's commitment to proactively tackling financial fraud in the country.

Cudjoe stated that EOCO is collaborating with the Financial Intelligence Center, the FBI, and other intelligence agencies to address the menace.

“We are dealing with about 107 active cases. We have received referrals from international organisations and other sister agencies, including the FBI. Locally, we are working with the Financial Intelligence Center, the NTA, and others under what we call the mutual legal assistance regime,” he said.

The Director of Administration further disclosed that, in 2024, approximately GH¢2 million was recovered.
