Ohanaeze to Host 2025 Igbo Day Honoring Late Patriots

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has announced its plans for the 2025 Igbo Day celebration, which will serve as a solemn occasion to honor the memory of late Igbo patriots and heroes. The event is set to encapsulate the profound essence of Igbo unity, remembrance, and resilience, bringing together Ndigbo from various parts of the world.
Scheduled to take place in Awka, Anambra State, on Sunday, September 28, and Monday, September 29, 2025, the celebration will revolve around the poignant theme, “Onye Aghana Nwanne Ya,” which translates to "Be your brother’s keeper." This theme underscores the core values of solidarity and communal support that are central to Igbo culture.
According to Ezechi Chukwu, the national publicity secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Igbo Day holds significant cultural and spiritual importance within the Igbo national calendar. He emphasized that it is a dedicated moment for collective reflection, serving primarily to commemorate the sacrifices of past Igbo patriots whose legacies continue to foster a spirit of unity, justice, and peace among Ndigbo. The annual gathering is designed to unite Igbo sons and daughters globally, reaffirming their commitment to love, solidarity, and the overarching progress of Alaigbo (Igbo land).
Distinguished personalities are slated to play key roles in the 2025 celebration. Senator Ned Nwoko will chair the occasion, while Senator Azuta Mbata, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, will serve as the chief host. Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State, will assume the role of host governor.
The two-day event will feature several significant activities. A Thanksgiving Service is planned to be held simultaneously across numerous churches throughout Igbo land on Sunday, September 28, 2025, marking a spiritual commencement. The program also includes a thought-provoking public lecture, which will bring together eminent scholars, cultural leaders, and stakeholders to discuss relevant issues concerning the Igbo nation. These intellectual engagements will be complemented by prayers, heartfelt tributes, and vibrant performances that will vividly showcase the rich and diverse Igbo heritage.
