Edward Mekenye and his brother lost their lives in a terrible road accident that also killed several others on the evening of Friday, July 11.

Over a dozen people were left injured and taken to various medical facilities following the tragic incident.

A heavy cloud of sorrow hung over Mekenye's homestead as a sombre mass was held in honour of the two brothers.

It was an emotional gathering as family and friends came together to mourn the young men whose lives were cut short.

The two died on the spot when a lorry carrying timber reportedly experienced brake failure and rammed into their stationary vehicle.

According to the family’s spokesperson, Edward and Robert had recently attended a funeral with their spouses and a neighbour.

They had parked by the roadside as the women went to a nearby shop to buy food.

“Edward and Robert died on the spot when the accident happened, but their wives and the neighbour escaped. The two young men were the only sons in the family,” Robert Gesicho, the family spokesperson, painfully revealed.

Residents turned up in large numbers at the accident scene, mourning the lives lost.

The timber-laden truck was destroyed by the impact and the heavy load it was carrying.

Its body was wrecked beyond repair, with the windshield, windows, and other glass parts shattered.

Locals expressed not only sorrow but also anger, blaming the government for failing to improve the infrastructure.

They demanded immediate action to expand and upgrade the road, noting that too many lives had been lost due to its poor condition.

They called on the government and relevant authorities to erect speed bumps along the stretch to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.

Families affected by the tragedy gathered at St. Joseph’s Nyansiongo Mission Hospital Level IV as they struggled to come to terms with their immense loss.

One of the victims was Haron Mecha, who was knocked down by the same lorry while selling SIM cards by the roadside.

His death left a massive void in his family, with his brother painfully recounting the tragedy.

“He was selling Airtel lines, and by bad luck, the vehicle lost control, and the head of the trailer hit his head,” said Shem Nyandoro, the 22-year-old’s brother.
