Nursing Profession: Burnout, Balance and Future

Nursing Week, celebrated from May 12 to May 18, 2025, is a time to recognize the invaluable contributions of nurses. The College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is using the theme "This is Nursing" to celebrate the diversity within the nursing profession. This campaign highlights the various experiences, approaches, and journeys that enrich nursing and ensure safe patient care. The CNO will share authentic stories from nurses, patients, and employers, showcasing the diverse knowledge, skills, and settings in which nurses work, from acute care to community and palliative care.

Silvie Crawford, RN, CNO's Registrar/Executive Director & CEO, emphasizes that nurses are leaders who demonstrate commitment, champion positive change, and dedicate their lives to serving patients. Nitha Reno, Manager at the Regional Municipality of Durham, highlights that nurses navigate complex challenges and bring comfort, dignity, and hope. Leonor De Biasio, RN, notes that care extends beyond hospital walls, with nurses making meaningful impacts in homes and families' lives. Samantha McAran, RPN, underscores the importance of advocating for clients to ensure they receive the best possible care and incorporating their culture and beliefs into their care.

A new survey by AMN Healthcare reveals that while 75% of nurses are satisfied with their career choice, many face burnout, mental health challenges, and staffing issues. More than half (58%) report feeling burnout most days, and only 39% plan to remain in their current positions in 12 months. A significant 64% report that compassion fatigue has impacted their health, and 33% are eligible to retire soon. Flexible schedules are seen as a key improvement, with 81% saying they would improve working conditions.

Dr. Angelo Venditti, Chief Nursing Executive at AMN Healthcare, stresses the importance of addressing nurses' concerns by prioritizing well-being through flexible scheduling, technology, and innovative staffing solutions. The survey highlights that flexible work hours could encourage nurses to stay in the profession longer. Robin Johnson, Group President of Nursing & Allied Solutions at AMN Healthcare, suggests that healthcare administrators should invest in sustainable solutions to help nurses rediscover their purpose, offering more schedule flexibility and a better work/life balance.

AMN Healthcare's survey recommends using advanced scheduling technologies and AI tools, implementing mentorship models, enhancing financial incentives, and expanding workplace violence prevention measures. By taking these steps, healthcare leaders can address nurse burnout and stress, improve patient care and outcomes, and uplift the nursing profession.

Overall, Nursing Week 2025 is a time to recognize and celebrate the hard work and dedication of nurses across Ontario and the United States. While nurses find satisfaction in their careers, it is essential to address the challenges they face to ensure their well-being and the future of the profession.
