AIIMS Bilaspur's Healthcare Self-Reliance Goal

Published 5 days ago3 minute read

The All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) Bilaspur is rapidly advancing towards its goal of transforming Himachal Pradesh into a self-reliant state in healthcare. According to Prof DN Sharma, Director of AIIMS Bilaspur, the institute has achieved significant milestones in less than three years since its establishment, showcasing remarkable progress in infrastructure development, medical innovations, and dedicated efforts in specialized care.

AIIMS Bilaspur has substantially expanded its inpatient capacity, increasing from 690 to 728 beds, and now effectively caters to over 1,500 patients daily, with monthly indoor admissions exceeding 4,000. A landmark achievement in its clinical journey was the successful completion of its first kidney transplant. The institute treats over 30,000 patients each month and has cultivated a robust community outreach program. This growth is supported by strong interdisciplinary collaborations and the acquisition of state-of-the-art medical equipment, including an advanced MRI facility. Furthermore, AIIMS Bilaspur is exceptionally prepared for emergencies, boasting four times more ventilators than any other hospital in Himachal Pradesh.

Academically, AIIMS Bilaspur maintains a strong foundation with 620 students currently enrolled, including 100 MBBS seats, and offers comprehensive medical education across 17 broad specialities. Despite ongoing recruitment drives, Prof. Sharma acknowledged the current vacancy of some faculty positions in medical gastroenterology, which the institute is actively working to fill.

A primary focus area for AIIMS Bilaspur is comprehensive cancer care. The institute is actively involved in ICMR-backed research projects specifically targeting breast and cervical cancer. Its radiation oncology department demonstrates high utilization, regularly treating 83 patients, with daily attendance ranging from 20 to 30 individuals, totaling approximately 900 treatments so far. Work is also underway for the establishment of a dedicated Trauma Centre, further enhancing its critical care capabilities. Prof Sharma highlighted the growing concern over lifestyle-related cancers, including rising cases of lung cancer and the prevalence of prostate cancer, particularly noted in Delhi. To bolster its diagnostic capabilities, AIIMS Bilaspur is soon expected to be equipped with PET scan and titration control facilities, promising enhanced precision in medical diagnoses.

Looking ahead, AIIMS Bilaspur has proposed a Phase 2 expansion project valued at Rs 178.05 crore. Additionally, a feasibility survey has been conducted for a Rs 332 crore initiative aimed at supporting future developments, particularly the expansion of advanced cancer treatment infrastructure. This rapid expansion in both infrastructure and services positions AIIMS Bilaspur among the fastest-growing AIIMS institutions nationwide. The ultimate vision is to eliminate the need for residents of the region to travel outside Himachal Pradesh for advanced medical treatments, ensuring high-quality healthcare is accessible locally.
