NSA Doval and Chinese FM Wang Yi Discuss India-China Ties

Recent high-level diplomatic engagements between India and China have focused on reviewing the intricate developments in their bilateral relations. National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing on Tuesday, June 24, 2025. During their comprehensive discussions, both leaders emphasized the critical need to promote the overall development of bilateral ties, particularly by fostering greater people-to-people connections. A significant point raised by NSA Doval was the imperative to counter terrorism in all its forms and manifestations to maintain peace and stability in the region. The talks also covered various other bilateral, regional, and global issues of mutual interest, as confirmed by a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal. NSA Doval was attending the 20th Meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Security Council Secretaries, providing a broader regional context to the discussions. He also expressed anticipation for a future meeting with Wang Yi in India for the 24th round of the Special Representative (SR) Talks at a mutually convenient date.

This meeting followed an earlier interaction between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong in Delhi, which took place from June 12-13, 2025. This interaction served as a review of developments in India-China bilateral relations since their last meeting in Beijing on January 27, 2025. Both sides agreed to continue efforts to stabilize and rebuild ties, placing a strong emphasis on people-centric engagements. Foreign Secretary Misri expressed India's appreciation for China's cooperation in facilitating the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra for the current year, highlighting a positive step in religious and cultural exchange.

Furthermore, discussions during the April 2025 meeting of the Expert Level Mechanism on transboundary rivers were brought up, with Foreign Secretary Misri expressing hope for progress on resuming hydrological data sharing and other areas of cooperation related to these vital resources. Both nations also agreed to expedite steps involved in resuming direct air services, a move designed to enhance connectivity and trade. The Foreign Secretary also expressed hope for the early conclusion of an updated Air Services Agreement. In a broader effort to strengthen mutual understanding and collaboration, the MEA noted that both sides consented to implement practical measures for visa facilitation and promote exchanges between media organizations and think tanks, underscoring a holistic approach to fostering the relationship.
