NPP Presidential Race Heats Up: Kennedy Agyapong Secures Coveted No.1 Spot on Ballot

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) successfully conducted the balloting exercise for its presidential candidates on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra. This crucial step precedes the much-anticipated presidential primary, which is scheduled for January 31, 2026. Among the five aspirants vying for the flagbearer position, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, secured the highly coveted number one spot on the ballot paper.
Following the balloting, the spokesperson for the Ken Agyapong campaign team, Kwasi Kwarteng, addressed journalists, describing the process as fair and transparent. Mr. Kwarteng emphasized that while the team was not "overly fixated" on any particular number, they acknowledged the significant marketing, public relations, and visibility advantages that come with occupying the number one position. He stated, "In terms of the people, the marketing, and the visibility of the ballots, being number one gives us a lot of advantage," and further added that it symbolized "good fortune" and a "sign of victory" for their camp.
Despite the strategic benefits of the top ballot position, the campaign team affirmed that their primary confidence is rooted in their core message. Mr. Kwarteng reiterated Kennedy Agyapong’s commitment to addressing critical national issues, primarily focusing on "jobs, jobs, and more jobs" and the need for a "new face" in the spirit of economic revival. He stressed that their strategy involves direct engagement with delegates nationwide to communicate this message effectively.
When questioned about a comparison to the 2024 primary, where Mr. Agyapong also drew the number one spot but did not win, Mr. Kwarteng clarified that the circumstances of the two elections are entirely different. He asserted that the current dynamics and the number one position "should send a strong signal that we are coming up," while maintaining a belief that "whatever number we choose is divine."
The final order of candidates on the ballot paper for the NPP presidential primary is as follows: Kennedy Ohene Agyapong (1st), Dr Bryan Acheampong (2nd), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia (3rd), Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum (4th), and Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong (5th).
Adding to the momentum, a recent poll conducted by Sanity Africa, a Pan-African civil society organization, has projected Kennedy Agyapong as the likely winner of the upcoming primaries. The Phase Two survey, released in October 2025, indicated that Mr. Agyapong has strengthened his lead among NPP delegates, projecting him to secure 53.1% of the total vote. As the January 2026 primary approaches, campaign activities are expected to intensify across all aspirants.
