NPP Flagbearer Race Heats Up: Adutwum, Bawumia, Agyapong Vie for Top Spot

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is currently navigating a pivotal period as it approaches its presidential primaries, with various aspirants and party figures emphasizing the critical importance of unity, integrity, and disciplined political discourse. The overarching sentiment within the party centers on selecting a flagbearer capable of leading Ghana into a new era of growth, stability, and transformation, while upholding the NPP's core values of discipline, progress, and tradition.
Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Bosomtwe Member of Parliament and former Minister for Education, has consistently advocated for a leadership founded on integrity, inspiration, and national service, rather than personal ambition. Following a breakfast meeting with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and fellow aspirants, Dr. Adutwum articulated his vision for a campaign driven by ideas, discipline, and mutual respect. He views the upcoming leadership contest as a vital opportunity to demonstrate the NPP's democratic maturity and ideological strength, emphasizing the party's capacity to disagree without discord and contest without contempt. His campaign, branded #TheAdutwumFactor, seeks to present a forward-looking, unifying vision rooted in service, competence, and character, building on his recognized reformist approach to education transformation.
In a different vein, Kobina Amo-Aidoo, an aspiring Ashanti Regional Assistant Secretary of the NPP, has openly rooted for Kennedy Agyapong to lead the party into the next General Elections. Amo-Aidoo believes Agyapong possesses the strength, discipline, and attributes necessary to unite the party and restore hopes for a return to government. Describing Agyapong as “The Number One Patriot Poised to Resurrect the United Spirit of the NPP for victory 2028,” supporters view him as embodying the true “United Party” spirit, a unique blend of strength, discipline, and authenticity. His political brand is characterized by unapologetic patriotism, open criticism of hypocrisy within political structures, and active involvement in funding youth development initiatives, championing local enterprise, and boldly confronting corruption and complacency. Agyapong’s appeal lies in his straightforwardness and insistence on merit and accountability, resonating with ordinary Ghanaians weary of political promises and advocating for leaders who prioritize national interest over party loyalty. His message aims to rebuild the NPP into an inclusive party that welcomes every member’s contribution, bridging generational gaps through open dialogue and respect.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s leadership style has garnered significant praise, particularly from Dormaa West Constituency Chairman, Kwame Owusu. Mr. Owusu lauded the former Vice President’s temperament, patience, and maturity in handling political attacks, highlighting his unwavering focus on unity over division. According to Owusu, Dr. Bawumia’s conduct throughout the campaign signals a leader destined to win, capable of uniting everyone after the elections. Owusu also credited Dr. Bawumia with reviving the NPP’s spirit and performance prior to the 2024 polls, asserting that the party was in disarray and would have secured less than 20 percent of votes had elections been held then. The decision for an early congress was also applauded by party executives, as it provides the flagbearer ample time to prepare and mobilize support across the country effectively.
Amidst these individual campaigns, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has taken a crucial step to foster party unity. He hosted a breakfast meeting with the five presidential aspirants at his private residence in Nima, Accra, an initiative highly commended by figures like Assin South MP Rev. John Ntim Fordjour and Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum. This meeting, aimed at promoting camaraderie and unity, was seen as an exemplary act of leadership. Both Rev. Ntim Fordjour and Dr. Adutwum praised Akufo-Addo’s timely call for civility and restraint, underscoring its vital role in preserving cohesion within the party as it prepares to elect its next flagbearer. The former president urged aspirants to conduct their campaigns in a manner that maintains party unity, putting aside personal interests for a strong, united front. This collective effort reinforces the party’s commitment to its founding ideals of discipline, progress, and tradition, striving for a unified and focused path toward future electoral success in 2028 and beyond.
