NPFL Fury: Kano Pillars Hit With Heavy Sanctions Over Crowd Violence, Officiating Woes

Kano Pillars have been met with severe sanctions from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following an incident of crowd violence that occurred during their matchday eight encounter against Shooting Stars. The fiercely contested game, held at the Sani Abacha Stadium, concluded in a 1-1 draw, after which agitated home fans attacked visiting players and match officials. This aggression stemmed from protests over alleged questionable decisions made during the game.
In response to the egregious breach of security and unsportsmanlike conduct, the NPFL imposed substantial penalties on Kano Pillars. The club was fined N9.5 million for its failure to ensure adequate security measures were in place at the stadium. Furthermore, Kano Pillars were docked three points and three goals from their accrued totals. As a consequence of the violence, the club has also been banished from their home ground, the Sani Abacha Stadium, for the remainder of the current season.
The match officials who presided over the contentious fixture have also faced disciplinary action from the NPFL. Centre referee Mohammed B Tuta, and assistant referees Bem Japhet and Shehu Isah, were attacked by Kano Pillars fans after the game, prompting the league to recommend sanctions. Consequently, the trio has been stepped down from officiating in the NPFL for an indefinite period. The NPFL has also formally requested that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) conduct a thorough reappraisal of their suitability to manage future league matches, ensuring the integrity and safety of the competition.
