Chaos Erupts in Kano: Pillars Fans Invade Pitch, Super Eagles Captain Apologizes
)
A Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 8 fixture between Kano Pillars Football Club and Shooting Stars Sports Club at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano was marred by a severe pitch invasion and acts of violence from Kano Pillars fans. The chaotic scenes erupted after Shooting Stars scored a dramatic 94th-minute equalizer, securing a 1-1 draw. Mustapha Adams' late goal canceled out Mustapha Jibrin's ninth-minute opener for Kano Pillars, sparking outrage among thousands of home supporters.
Enraged by the game's outcome and allegations of biased officiating, Kano Pillars fans breached security barriers, stormed the playing surface, and proceeded to chase and physically assault the match referee. The violence extended beyond match officials, as Shooting Stars players Ismail Ayodele and Adams Agba’a sustained head injuries, and other team officials were also caught in the melee. Security forces eventually had to deploy tear gas to quell the unrest and restore order, but not before the incident drew widespread condemnation across Nigeria's football community.
In the aftermath of the disgraceful events, Super Eagles captain and General Manager of Kano Pillars Football Club, Ahmed Musa, issued a comprehensive and heartfelt apology via his verified X account. Musa conveyed his "deepest and most sincere apologies for the unfortunate, painful, and disgraceful incident" that transpired. He explicitly stated that such actions "do not represent the true values, identity, or the proud history of Kano Pillars," emphasizing that the club has always upheld "community, passion, and respect," values that must never be overshadowed by violence or indiscipline.
Musa extended an "unreserved apology" to a wide range of affected parties, including the players, coaches, officials, and supporters of Shooting Stars Sports Club, the match referees, league officials, the Nigeria Premier Football League board and its partners at GTI, and every football fan across Nigeria and beyond who witnessed the scenes with anger and disappointment. He acknowledged the profound pain such an incident inflicted upon the game, reiterating his profound sorrow: "I am deeply, deeply sorry."
Strongly condemning the acts, Musa asserted, "Violence has no place in football. It is unacceptable, unjustifiable, and goes against everything this beautiful sport stands for. Football is meant to unite, to inspire, to bring joy. When it turns into scenes of chaos and harm, we must not pretend it away, we must confront it head-on." He assured the public that Kano Pillars FC would collaborate closely with relevant authorities to identify those responsible for the shameful acts, promising that they would "face the full consequences of their actions."
Underscoring that apologies alone are insufficient, Musa pledged that "Words must be followed by action," and that significant internal steps would be taken to prevent any recurrence of such an incident. Directly addressing the loyal fans of Kano Pillars, he implored them to recognize that "true support is shown not through violence, but through respect, passion, and discipline." He called for this event to serve as a crucial "turning point" for the club, aiming to restore trust, respect, and the genuine spirit of football in Kano and across Nigeria.
