No Directive To Close Seme Border Over Lagos LG Election - NIS
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Seme Border Command, has said it has not received any directive to shut the border in connection with the Lagos State local government elections.
The Comptroller of the Command, Abdullahi Adamu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Seme.
Adamu clarified that the Seme border is an international crossing point, which falls under the Exclusive Legislative List, meaning that any decision regarding its closure must come from the Federal Government.
He explained that the NIS would not bar people from entering the country through the Seme border but would only advise them to remain in the border area until after the stipulated 3 p.m. time.
According to him, while foreigners arriving at the border would have their passports duly stamped in, they would be encouraged to wait at a designated area until 3 p.m. before proceeding further into the country.
“Closing of an international border should come from higher authority. There is no information regarding restriction of movement till 3 p.m., so our status quo remains,” he said.
Adamu assured that the command was on alert and would comply with any new directive from higher authorities if a movement restriction order was issued.
Lagos State holds its local government elections on Saturday, with a 3 p.m. restriction on movement across the state, which is in effect to ensure a smooth electoral process.
