Kenyans can now pay for Showmax subscriptions straight from their Airtel Money wallets following a new integration between Airtel Money Kenya and MultiChoice’s streaming platform.

The update allows Airtel Money users to sign up, renew, or activate Showmax plans without using debit cards or third-party payment gateways. The move comes at a time when streaming demand typically rises during the holiday period and removes one of the most persistent friction points for digital subscriptions in the country: access to card-based payments.

The integration reinforces the growing role of mobile money as critical infrastructure for digital services in Africa, particularly in mobile-first and price-sensitive markets. For streaming platforms, embedding payments into widely used mobile wallets is increasingly central to customer acquisition and retention.

According to Airtel Money Kenya’s Managing Director, Anne Kinuthia-Otieno, the partnership is designed to simplify access to entertainment while ensuring secure and reliable transactions for users.

With the new option in place, Airtel Money customers can pay for Showmax Entertainment, Showmax Entertainment Mobile, and Showmax Premier League Mobile by selecting Airtel Money at checkout and authorising the transaction with their PIN.

For MultiChoice, the integration forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen digital distribution as competition in the streaming market intensifies. By aligning with established mobile money systems, Showmax is adapting its payment model to match how most African consumers already transact.

Nzola Miranda, Managing Director of MultiChoice Kenya, said the partnership makes it easier for customers to access both local and international content by removing payment complexity.

The development also reflects a wider shift within Kenya’s telecom sector. Mobile money platforms are expanding beyond peer-to-peer transfers and bill payments into recurring subscriptions and digital content.

Safaricom’s M-Pesa already supports payments for services such as Spotify, YouTube Premium, and various utility subscriptions, underscoring how telcos are positioning mobile wallets as default payment rails for everyday digital consumption.

As streaming platforms compete for growth in Kenya and across Africa, control and integration of mobile payment channels are becoming a decisive factor in winning customer loyalty.

1. Visit the Showmax website and select Sign Up.

2. Select your preferred subscription plan.

3. SelectAirtel Money payment options.

4. Enter your Airtel mobile number for the payment.

5. Enter your Airtel Money pin and approve the transaction.
