No arrests yet in Sapeiman contraband seizure - Muntaka
Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka is the Minister of Interior
The Minister of the Interior, Mohammed-Mubarak Muntaka, has disclosed that no arrests have been made so far in connection with the seizure of 12 containers suspected to contain gold bars, counterfeit foreign currencies, and other contraband items at Sapeiman in the Greater Accra Region.
The Minister disclosed this during a briefing to Parliament on July 9, 2025, four months after National Security operatives intercepted the containers following an intelligence-led operation.
“Security operatives acting on intelligence report successfully intercepted suspected counterfeit US dollars and fraudulent gold bars stored in a shipping container located at the Sapeiman area,” he stated.
He explained that the Ministry of National Security is currently collaborating with the US Embassy to authenticate the suspected counterfeit currencies, while the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Gold Board are examining the intercepted gold bars to determine their authenticity.
“The investigation is ongoing to identify the suspect and their agent and the extent of the operation,” he added.
Parliament has since called for swift and transparent investigations to unravel the full scope of the incident.
