NNPP Fights for Electoral Justice: Demands INEC Court Judgment Compliance

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), under the leadership of Dr. Agbo Major, has issued a strong appeal to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging it to uphold and respect all subsisting court judgments concerning the party’s ongoing leadership dispute. Major cautioned that INEC's continued disregard for judicial rulings poses a significant threat to Nigeria’s democratic process and could severely undermine the credibility of its institutions, particularly as the nation approaches the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Dr. Major articulated that INEC’s persistent recognition of a faction within the NNPP whose legitimacy is actively contested in court directly contradicts the fundamental principle of the rule of law. He emphasized that for democracy to thrive and remain stable, it is imperative that institutions like INEC do not position themselves above the law, stressing that unwavering obedience to judicial decisions is a cornerstone of democratic governance. “INEC must not act above the law. Our democracy will collapse if institutions choose who to obey and who to disobey,” he asserted.
Major further highlighted that despite clear and unequivocal judicial pronouncements, the electoral commission has continued to engage with and recognize individuals whose status within the NNPP remains a subject of ongoing litigation. This stance by INEC, according to Major, has introduced considerable confusion within the party's internal structure and has inadvertently emboldened a faction whose legitimacy is still under judicial review. Such conduct, he argued, not only subverts the principle of judicial authority but also compromises the rule of law, both of which are indispensable for maintaining democratic stability.
The NNPP chairman underscored that as a political party committed to legal adherence, the NNPP fully expects INEC to align its operational conduct strictly with existing court rulings, rather than allowing political maneuvering or personal considerations to influence its decisions. He also brought forth an accusation that the commission has disregarded due process by engaging with individuals who allegedly lack the legal recognition to serve as party leaders. Major concluded with a stern warning, indicating that if INEC persists in ignoring valid judicial directives, the NNPP would be compelled to explore and implement lawful measures, including the mobilization of Nigerians for peaceful protests, to safeguard the nation’s democratic integrity.
