Former Defence Minister and Bimbilla MP, Dominic Nitiwul, has declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has already settled on its leader for the high-stakes 2028 general elections. Speaking on Joy News programme PM Express, Nitiwul argued that the party lacks the luxury of time to rebrand or sell a new presidential candidate to the Ghanaian electorate, describing the upcoming contest as a decisive moment for the party’s political survival.

According to Nitiwul, the consequences of another electoral defeat would be dire for the New Patriotic Party, stressing that 2028 represents a “do-or-die” moment. He warned that experimenting with an untested candidate could expose the party to unnecessary risk, insisting that continuity and familiarity are critical factors if the NPP hopes to regain power after recent setbacks.

The former minister was unequivocal in endorsing Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s most viable option. He described Dr. Bawumia as the safest bet for 2028, citing his national profile, political experience, and electoral appeal. Nitiwul drew parallels with former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s multiple attempts before eventual success, arguing that sustained visibility and perseverance often shape electoral credibility.

Nitiwul further noted that Dr. Bawumia’s strengths lie in the fact that his record, competence, and integrity have already been subjected to intense public scrutiny. Unlike a new entrant, the Vice President is a known quantity to both supporters and critics, reducing uncertainty for the party as it prepares for a highly competitive election cycle. In his view, this level of familiarity offers the NPP its best chance at restoring voter confidence.
