Nigerian Trailblazer: Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna's Historic Election at Harvard Law

Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna, a distinguished student at Harvard Law School (HLS), has been officially elected as the Student Government Co-President for the upcoming 2026–2027 school year. This significant achievement, shared alongside her co-candidate Tenzin Yonten, marks not only a proud moment for the HLS community but also a notable accomplishment for the global Nigerian diaspora. Responding to the election announcement on LinkedIn, Ifeanyi expressed her humility and honor, stating, "I am humbled and honoured to have been elected 2026-2027 Harvard Law School Student Government Co-President, alongside my wonderful co-candidate Tenzin Y.! Thank you to the Student Body for believing in our vision. We are ready to serve."

Ifeanyi’s journey to this prominent leadership role is characterized by a remarkable list of academic and professional accolades. Prior to her enrollment at Harvard, she distinguished herself as a 2024 Gates Cambridge Scholar, completing an MPhil in Criminology at the prestigious University of Cambridge. Her scholarly research at Cambridge focused intensely on international criminal justice systems, a profound interest that was cultivated during her tenure as a Congressional Aide for U.S. Representative Stephen Lynch, where she gained invaluable experience in public service and legal frameworks.

Her commitment to social impact and justice extends beyond her academic pursuits. As an undergraduate at American University, where she graduated summa cum laude in Political Science, Ifeanyi founded ZeEntry, a non-profit organization dedicated to bridging the technological divide for individuals involved with the justice system. This initiative underscores her dedication to leveraging innovation for equitable outcomes.

Excellence appears to be a deeply ingrained family trait for Ifeanyi. She is the daughter of Professor Dehlia Umunna, a trailblazing figure in her own right. Professor Umunna serves as a Clinical Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and is the Faculty Director of the Law School’s Criminal Justice Institute (CJI). Notably, Professor Dehlia Umunna also holds the distinction of being the first Nigerian professor at Harvard Law School, setting a powerful precedent for her daughter.

Adding to her recent successes, Ifeanyi was also honored with the prestigious Chayes Fellowship by Harvard Law. This fellowship is designed to support her during her Summer 2026 internship, which she will undertake at the UK’s Public Defender Service. This opportunity will allow her to apply her specialized expertise in London, a city that holds particular significance as it was where her mother’s distinguished legal career commenced. With her multifaceted roles as a Juris Doctor candidate, a former Congressional staffer, and now a newly elected student body president, Ifeanyi Ruth Umunna undeniably represents a promising figure to watch in the legal and leadership spheres.
