Nigerian Football History Made: Akor Adams' Sensational Super Eagles Debut Goal
)
Nigerian striker Akor Adams made an unforgettable international debut for the Super Eagles, etching his name into the country's football history with a crucial match-winning goal. The Sevilla star's heroics came during a tense 2026 World Cup qualifier against Lesotho, where he came off the bench to secure a 2-1 victory for Nigeria and keep their qualification hopes alive.
The 25-year-old forward was introduced as a second-half substitute for Tolu Arokodare. With the score tied after William Troost-Ekong had converted a penalty for Nigeria, and Lesotho had also scored, Adams rose to the occasion in the 80th minute. Receiving a precise pass from Victor Osimhen, he demonstrated remarkable composure, beating his marker with ease before unleashing a low left-footed finish past the goalkeeper. This brilliant strike doubled Nigeria's lead and ultimately sealed the win.
Adams' debut goal places him in a distinguished group of Nigerian footballers who have scored in their first appearance for the senior national team. He follows in the footsteps of legends such as Obafemi Martins, who famously scored against Ireland in May 2004, and Julius Aghahowa, who announced his arrival with a goal against Morocco at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations at just 17 years old. Other notable players to achieve this feat include Ekigho Ehiosun, Stephen Ayo Makinwa, Femi Opabunmi, and Brian Idowu.
Adams' club, Sevilla, wasted no time in celebrating their star striker's achievement. Their official X (formerly Twitter) account erupted with enthusiasm, quoting Nigeria's goal announcement with a simple yet powerful "Akorrrrr!" This was followed by a series of congratulatory posts, including "Akor with a late winner on his debut" and the confident declaration, "First game ☑️. First goal. We mount." The club even shared a GIF reflecting the "Admin's mood" after Adams' winning goal.
The victory against Lesotho, while critical, leaves Nigeria's 2026 World Cup qualification hanging by a thread. The Super Eagles currently sit third in Group C with 14 points, trailing Benin (17 points) and South Africa (15 points) after a dramatic penultimate round of fixtures. To secure automatic qualification, Nigeria must defeat Benin in their upcoming match by at least two goals, which could potentially lift them above Benin on goal difference. Furthermore, they need South Africa to fail to win against Rwanda in their respective match. Adams, who has been in fine form for Sevilla, scoring in consecutive La Liga games against Rayo Vallecano and Barcelona, will be looking to continue his impressive run when Nigeria faces Benin on Tuesday in a must-win encounter.
