The federal government of Nigeria has officially solidified a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) with Brazil, a pivotal move aimed at establishing direct flight connections between the two nations. This significant agreement was formally signed in Brasília by Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil's Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho. The accord marks a new and robust framework for direct air connectivity, designed to unlock fresh opportunities across various sectors, including trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people exchanges.

This strategic milestone is anticipated to foster stronger economic integration, deepen cultural ties, and enhance diplomatic cooperation between Nigeria and Brazil. According to a statement from Tunde Moshood, Special Adviser, Media to the Minister, the agreement underscores President Bola Tinubu's administration's unwavering commitment to expanding Nigeria's global partnerships and cultivating an enabling environment for commerce and mobility. The Brazilian President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, enthusiastically endorsed the partnership, expressing Brazil's readiness to further strengthen ties with Nigeria in diverse areas such as aviation, agriculture, and infrastructure development.

The signing of the BASA was a major highlight during a visit led by President Tinubu to Brazil, accompanied by a high-level delegation of senior cabinet members. This delegation included the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Olawale Edun; the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Onoh Ojukwu; Olorogun Keyamo; and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was formally signed to solidify the Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and Brazil during this visit. This MOU is considered a crucial step in bolstering bilateral relations between what are recognized as the two largest economies on their respective continents.

Further progress in implementing this agreement was revealed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Air Peace, Allen Onyema. Onyema announced that Air Peace has secured approval to commence direct passenger flights between Lagos, Nigeria, and São Paulo, Brazil, operating under the newly concluded BASA. He confirmed that the agreement was finalized in Brasília on Monday, in the presence of Presidents Bola Tinubu and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, with Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil's Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, as key signatories. Onyema characterized the Lagos-São Paulo route as "long overdue" and emphasized its significant potential to boost Nigeria's aviation sector.

Air Peace plans to initially launch the service with three weekly flights, with intentions to increase frequency as demand and operational conditions evolve. The inaugural direct connection between both countries by a Nigerian carrier is scheduled to commence by late November 2025. This development marks a historic moment, promising to open new corridors for travel and commerce and further cementing the bonds between Nigeria and Brazil.
