Nigeria's Super Falcons Reign Supreme: 10th WAFCON Title & Mission X Triumph!
)
The Super Falcons of Nigeria achieved a historic milestone by clinching their record-extending 10th Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, dubbed "Mission X." This triumphant victory came after a thrilling 3-2 comeback against host nation Morocco in the final, a match held at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat that will be remembered for generations.
The final match was a pulsating display of resilience. Morocco initiated a fast start, with Ghiziane Chebbak scoring in the 13th minute, followed by Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th, giving Morocco a two-goal lead at halftime. Despite facing a hostile atmosphere, including Moroccan fans shining laser lights onto Nigerian players like Esther Okoronkwo, the Super Falcons staged a dramatic second-half resurgence. Coach Justin Madugu's tactical changes, including bringing on Rinsola Babajide and Jennifer Echegini, proved pivotal. Esther Okoronkwo pulled one back from the penalty spot in the 64th minute, then assisted Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer in the 71st. The match-winning goal came in the 88th minute when Okoronkwo again found Jennifer Echegini, sealing the 3-2 comeback. Defender Michelle Alozie playfully mocked the Moroccan supporters' efforts post-match with the cheeky Snapchat caption: “Their lasers didn’t work,” symbolizing the team's unwavering composure.
The Super Falcons' victory ignited widespread celebration and commendation across Nigeria. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu extended his congratulations, praising the team's talent, discipline, and belief. First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu also lauded their resilience, hard work, consistency, and the indomitable Nigerian spirit, declaring them
