Nigeria's former president Buhari dies at 82 - Radio Univers 105.7fm
Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82 after a prolonged illness.
He passed away on Sunday, July 13, at a private clinic in London, according to a statement from the Nigerian presidency.
Buhari served as Nigeria’s head of state twice, first as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His passing marks the end of an era for Nigeria’s political landscape, where he remained a dominant figure for decades.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Buhari’s successor, described his death as a “great loss to Nigeria and the African continent,” noting his “steadfast commitment to discipline, anti-corruption, and public service.”
Buhari came to power in 2015 after defeating incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, making history as the first opposition candidate to win a presidential election in Nigeria. His campaign was driven by promises to fight corruption, end terrorism, and stabilize the economy.
However, his administration faced numerous challenges, including economic recession, high inflation, widespread insecurity, and youth-led protests like the #EndSARS movement. Despite criticism, supporters praised him for infrastructure projects and anti-graft efforts.
Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari joined the Nigerian military in 1961. He later led a military coup in 1983 before being overthrown two years later. His return to power as a civilian president more than three decades later was seen by many as a symbol of political resilience.
Details about funeral arrangements are yet to be announced. Tributes are pouring in from political leaders, former presidents, and citizens across Nigeria and beyond.
Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and several children.
