Name national asset after Buhari, APC chieftain urges Tinubu

Dr. Aliyu Ibrahim, MFR, a senior member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Founder of the National Agenda for Tinubu 2027 (NAFT.27), has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immortalise the late President Muhammadu Buhari by naming a critical national asset after him.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, Dr. Ibrahim said the appeal follows the death of Buhari, who passed away in a London hospital on July 13, 2025.

He said naming a major public institution or infrastructure after the late president would not only preserve his legacy but also serve as national recognition of his contributions to the country.

“By initiating this proclamation, President Tinubu would be allowing posterity to remember a leader who, after serving as a military head of state, returned through democratic means to serve the nation again as a civilian president,” Dr. Ibrahim said.

He described Buhari as a former military leader turned elected president who, despite repeated electoral defeats, persisted in his pursuit of democratic leadership.

According to Dr. Ibrahim, this perseverance marked a significant chapter in Nigeria’s political evolution.

Dr. Ibrahim, who was among the first to endorse Tinubu for a second term in office, said Buhari’s transformation from military ruler to elected leader had shifted public perception over time.

“His earlier years as a military head of state may have been controversial, but in death, we forgive past grievances and remember the broader national service rendered,” he said.

He further noted that Buhari’s eventual victory in 2015 was achieved with the support of President Tinubu, whom he referred to as the “political master strategist” behind the APC coalition that ended the 16-year rule of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Dr. Ibrahim emphasised that honouring Buhari posthumously by renaming a critical national facility in his memory would provide future generations with a reference point in Nigerian history. “This would place him firmly on the path of historical recognition as a civil veteran who transitioned from military rule to democratic governance,” he added.
