Nigeria's technology ecosystem is experiencing a significant transformation, moving beyond its traditional strength in consumer fintech. The current wave of innovators is focusing on leveraging artificial intelligence to address deep-seated structural economic challenges. This evolution was prominently showcased at the recent Squad Hackathon 3.0, an event orchestrated by HabariPay, the fintech arm of Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO). Hosted at the GTCentre in Lagos, the hackathon convened hundreds of student developers and AI enthusiasts from various Nigerian universities, challenging them to devise practical solutions for financial inclusion, enhanced productivity, and robust digital infrastructure.

The overwhelming interest in this year's competition underscored a massive surge in developer engagement. HabariPay received over 1,600 applications nationwide, with more than 600 participants meticulously shortlisted following comprehensive technical and GitHub portfolio evaluations. Eduofon Japhet, Managing Director of HabariPay, noted an over tenfold increase in participation compared to previous editions, signaling an explosive enthusiasm for AI-driven development among Nigeria's young engineering talent.

The coveted top prize was awarded to Team Block X from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). This three-member team, composed of Treasure Uvietobore (Platform & Systems Engineer), Naheem Olaide (Frontend & Machine Learning Developer), and Enoch Idowu (AI & Machine Learning Engineer), captivated the judges with their innovative creation, 'Guild.' Guild is an AI-powered platform designed to seamlessly integrate informal labor into the formal financial system. Addressing a critical structural issue, Guild tackles the financial invisibility of millions of skilled informal workers who lack essential transaction histories, credit records, or formal documentation. The platform utilizes 'Tola,' a Nigerian-English conversational voice agent, enabling everyday workers, such as bricklayers and artisans, to effortlessly interact with the system. This innovative fintech integration matches workers with employers, facilitates secure payments via Squad's infrastructure, and automatically constructs a verifiable financial record. Organizers highlighted that consistent engagement with Guild could unlock access to traditional banking and credit services within a mere 90 days.

Beyond Team Block X, another highly commended project was 'Tracker,' developed by Sherif Sani, a computer science student at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Tracker is an AI-driven system designed for monitoring workforce productivity, adeptly analyzing both remote and onsite team activities while maintaining a careful balance between performance analytics and privacy-centric controls. This strategic pivot towards embedded infrastructure and AI within Nigeria's tech scene mirrors the long-standing practices of global tech giants such as Stripe, Google, and Microsoft, who have consistently utilized targeted developer competitions to identify nascent talent and accelerate platform adoption.

During his address to the participants, GTCO Group CEO Segun Agbaje underscored the initiative's role as a vital conduit for identifying future technology leaders through practical, high-impact problem-solving. Agbaje remarked, “The world is not ruled by extroverts; it is ruled by thinkers,” urging the student innovators to prioritize resilience, collaborative efforts, and ethical execution in their endeavors. Recognizing a common challenge in the Nigerian hackathon landscape, where many student projects fail to progress beyond the closing ceremony, HabariPay is actively working to alter this narrative for Squad Hackathon 3.0.

Eduofon Japhet, HabariPay's Managing Director, outlined comprehensive plans for structured, post-event support aimed at ensuring the long-term viability of these promising prototypes. These initiatives include extensive mentorship and advanced technical training, financial tuition support to alleviate strain and enable students to complete their degrees, and direct employment pathways within the broader GTCO and HabariPay ecosystem. As Africa's largest startup ecosystem increasingly directs its focus toward artificial intelligence, corporate-backed infrastructure pipelines like Squad will prove indispensable. Should HabariPay succeed in transforming these student prototypes into sustainable, market-ready businesses, it stands to evolve from a mere fintech provider into a foundational infrastructure layer for Africa's digital future.
