Nicole Kidman Confirms 'Practical Magic 2' Wraps: Fans Rejoice for Magical Sequel Update!

Production for the highly anticipated sequel, "Practical Magic 2," has officially wrapped filming, as confirmed by star Nicole Kidman on Instagram. The beloved whimsigoth contemporary fantasy film, originally released in 1998, is set to return to screens on September 18, 2026. Kidman shared the news with a video of herself and co-star Sandra Bullock, captioning her post, "That’s a wrap on #PracticalMagic2! Thank you to the cast & crew for all your magic ✨"
Both Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are set to reprise their iconic roles as sisters Gillian and Sally Owens, who hail from a long lineage of witches. Also returning to the sequel are original stars Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest, who will portray the eccentric Owens aunts, Frances and Jet, respectively, educating the sisters on their magical heritage. The cast is further bolstered by new additions including Lee Pace ("Foundation"), Xolo Maridueña ("Blue Beetle"), Maisie Williams ("Game of Thrones"), Solly McLeod ("The Dead Don’t Hurt"), and Joey King.
The sequel will be directed by Susanne Bier, known for "Bird Box." Original writer Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first "Practical Magic," returns to co-write the screenplay with Georgia Pritchett. Denise Di Novi, an original producer, is also back for the project. The film is reportedly based on "The Book of Magic," another novel by "Practical Magic" author Alice Hoffman, from whose 1995 book the original film was also adapted.
Nicole Kidman offered insights into what fans can expect from "Practical Magic 2" during the Cannes Film Festival. She described the sequel as "fun and witchy," assuring fans that it will be "very faithful" to the original's spirit and the source material. Kidman emphasized, “We’re cognizant to how important those characters and that movie are to so many people. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. We’re going to draw from Alice Hoffman’s books, as the first movie did, and we’re going to be true to the chronology of how many years later it is.”
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the choice to adapt "The Book of Magic" offers hints. The novel explores one of Sally's daughters as a young adult grappling with love woes, suggesting the continuation of the curse on the Owens women. Although Sally and Gillian seemingly broke the curse in the first film, Kidman's comments about drawing from Hoffman's books indicate a new or persistent magical challenge might plague the family, requiring their intervention once more.
The original 1998 film, directed by Griffin Dunne with a runtime of 104 minutes, was not a box office hit, grossing $68.3 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. However, it later achieved cult hit status through home video, solidifying its place in the hearts of many fans. The film can currently be watched on Disney+.
