New Era Dawns: BMLL Crowns Brad Hunt Chairman Post-Nordic Capital Acquisition

BMLL, a leading independent provider of historical order book data and analytics for capital markets, has announced the strategic appointment of Brad Hunt as Chairman of its Board. This significant move follows Nordic Capital’s acquisition of BMLL in October 2025 and marks a pivotal next step in the company’s ambitious plan for international scaling and enhanced governance.

Brad Hunt brings an impressive three decades of experience in the financial data industry to his new role. Most recently, he served as CEO of Rimes Technologies, where he spearheaded a substantial expansion from benchmark data management into broader enterprise data management and investment solutions, culminating in the successful sale of the company in 2024. His extensive career also includes key strategy and business development positions at Bank of New York Mellon’s global markets division, as well as senior roles at IHS Markit and Goldman Sachs International in London.

Hunt succeeds Lee Hodgkinson, who transitions to an independent Non-Executive Director role on the board. Hodgkinson’s distinguished background includes serving as CEO of Euronext London and head of markets and global sales at OSTC, a prominent derivatives trading firm. In another key appointment, BMLL has also welcomed Spiros Giannaros as a US-based independent Non-Executive Director. Giannaros currently holds the position of CEO at Gresham Technologies and previously served as chief executive at Charles River Development and an executive vice president at State Street Bank.

The full composition of BMLL’s board now includes BMLL chief executive Paul Humphrey and chief financial and operating officer Nigel Medhurst, alongside Nordic Capital principals David Samuelsen and Dan Rosenberg, and Optiver representative Hilde Kaemingk. Optiver had previously participated as a strategic investor in BMLL’s funding rounds, which totaled $83 million across seed, Series A, and Series B before Nordic Capital’s involvement.

BMLL CEO Paul Humphrey expressed that Hunt’s appointment directly delivers on the ambitions outlined during Nordic Capital’s acquisition. Humphrey highlighted Hunt’s invaluable experience as BMLL embarks on extending its global footprint. Brad Hunt, in his own statement, emphasized the growing demand among market participants for deep historical data insight, particularly without the traditional operational burdens of sourcing, cleaning, and harmonizing raw data. He noted that BMLL’s platform is specifically designed to absorb these complex workloads on behalf of its clients.

The market for institutional-grade historical market data is characterized by its concentrated yet fiercely contested nature. BMLL operates within a segment that includes established players such as exchange data subsidiaries, specialist vendors, and the data arms of large financial information groups. BMLL’s core differentiator is its unparalleled depth of Level 3 order book coverage, offering full message-level reconstruction of order flow. This advanced capability is crucial for sophisticated applications like backtesting, execution analysis, and the training of quantitative and AI-driven trading models.

Nordic Capital’s acquisition strategy for BMLL aligns with a broader trend in the financial sector, where private equity firms are increasingly acquiring specialist financial data businesses. This strategy aims to consolidate operations, expand distribution into new geographical markets, and introduce adjacent product lines. Hunt’s prior experience at Rimes Technologies, where he successfully expanded the company’s focus from narrow benchmark data to broader enterprise data management, is directly pertinent to this strategic playbook.

Regulatory dynamics also significantly shape the competitive landscape. Frameworks such as MiFID II and its successors have elevated the requirements for best execution reporting and transaction cost analysis across European equities and derivatives. This regulatory imperative generates a structural and sustained demand for highly granular pre- and post-trade data. Such an environment ensures a durable commercial position for vendors offering high-fidelity historical data, provided they can consistently demonstrate the data quality expected by regulators and institutional risk functions.

BMLL’s near-term milestones are set to include securing new client wins in untapped geographies, expanding its asset class coverage beyond its current offerings of equities, ETFs, and futures, and seeing the new board composition translate into strategic partnership or distribution announcements that support its global growth trajectory.
