Netflix Unveils New D&D Horror Series 'Ravenloft' After Scrapping 'Forgotten Realms'

The beloved tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) has a storied, though often challenging, history of adaptation to the screen.
While some attempts have garnered significant fan loyalty, such as the cult-classic 1980s cartoon series and the critically well-received 2023 filmDungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, others, like the original 2000 feature film, have fallen short.
Now, Netflix is embarking on a new live-action D&D series, titled Ravenloft, based on the iconic franchise’s popular gothic-horror setting.
This new venture comes as Netflix has reportedly scrapped another planned D&D project, a live-action series based on the vast and intricate Forgotten Realms setting, which was previously in development with Drew Crevello and Shawn Levy attached.
The Ravenloft series promises a unique blend of prestige fantasy, adventure, gothic horror, and tragic romance.
It was first introduced in 1983 by creatorsTracy and Laura Hickman, the Ravenloft setting is a collection of mist-shrouded territories known as the Domains of Dread, each ruled by a powerful Darklord.
The most notorious of these is the vampire Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation will be at the heart of the series.
It will chart his origins from a tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons' most infamous villains, redefining adventure through character-driven stories of dark magic and supernatural intrigue.
The setting itself pays homage to classic horror tropes reminiscent of Dracula and Frankenstein, and has inspired numerous novels, tabletop RPG modules, video games, and companion rulebooks, including the recently updated Ravenloft: The Horrors Within.
It was also featured in the first season of the Wizards-produced D&D actual-play TV show, Dungeon Masters.
Bringing this dark fantasy world to life, acclaimed Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón is set to executive produce the series.
A two-time Oscar winner for Best Director for Gravity (2013) and Roma (2018), Cuarón, has a diverse and illustrious filmography.
His English-language feature debut was 1995's A Little Princess, and he gained widespread recognition with the 2001 Oscar-nominated erotic dramedy Y tu mamá también.
Cuarón demonstrated his profound understanding of fantasy with 2004's Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and has since explored bleak futures inChildren of Men and the terrors of outer space in Gravity.
He already has an established relationship with Netflix through his autobiographical film Romaand has ventured into streaming TV with the 2024 thriller miniseries Disclaimer for Apple TV.
The Ravenloft series will be written and executive produced by John August, a notable screenwriter known for his collaborations with Tim Burton on films like Big Fish.
Other executive producers include Gabriel Marano for Hasbro, Richard Schwartz, and Gaby Rodriguez for Esperanto Filmoj.
This collaboration involves Hasbro's Wizards of the Coast, the maker of D&D, ensuring a close alignment with the franchise's lore.
While no release date has been announced, the development of Ravenloft marks an exciting new chapter for Dungeons & Dragons on screen, promising a deep dive into one of its most compelling and terrifying settings.
