Netflix Unleashes 'Instant Classic' Crime Thriller Adaptation!

Fans of engrossing long-form genre storytelling have a wealth of new content to explore this week, with Netflix alone debuting two highly anticipated shows. Among the offerings is a new horror limited series, executive-produced by the acclaimed Duffer Brothers. Titled "Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen," this series delves into the unsettling narrative of a couple who encounter unexpected and terrifying demons during the pivotal week leading up to their wedding, promising a chilling viewing experience.
The second major release on Netflix is a significant reboot, continuing the streamer's trend of re-imagining popular properties, much like its successful adaptations of Guy Ritchie's "The Gentlemen" and the live-action "Avatar: The Last Airbender." This new nine-episode mystery is an adaptation of Jø Nesbo's renowned series of thriller novels, which previously saw a cinematic adaptation in the infamous film "The Snowman," starring Michael Fassbender and Rebecca Ferguson.
The original film adaptation of Nesbo's work, "The Snowman," was widely panned, grossing only around $40 million worldwide and currently holding a dismal 7% score on Rotten Tomatoes, solidifying its reputation as a significant cinematic disaster. This contrasts sharply with the broader context of adaptations of Scandinavian thrillers, such as Stieg Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," which became an international literary phenomenon. Larsson's work inspired a successful trilogy of Swedish films and an English-language adaptation directed by David Fincher. However, Fincher's film did not achieve sufficient success for direct sequels, leading to a later reboot, "The Girl in the Spider's Web," which also faced unfavorable reviews and struggled at the box office.
In stark contrast to these past disappointments, Netflix's new series, "Jø Nesbo's Detective Hole," aims to deliver a more faithful adaptation of the cherished source material. This approach mirrors the success of Prime Video's "Reacher" series, which built on the foundation laid by two theatrical films starring Tom Cruise but offered a more comprehensive and dedicated take on the character. The "Detective Hole" series features Tobias Santelmann in the titular role, alongside Joel Kinnaman, bringing the intricate world of Nesbo's novels to life.
Early reception for "Jø Nesbo's Detective Hole" has been overwhelmingly positive, with the series achieving a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes so far. Critics have lauded its execution, with Collider's Kelcie Mattson describing it as "a roundhouse-kick of a thrill ride" that "delivers virtually everywhere it should." This critical acclaim positions the show to appeal strongly to the dedicated audience that has embraced Prime Video's "Reacher" and "Bosch" series, both of which have become massive hits, alongside the multitude of successful Nordic-noir productions consistently performing well for Netflix. With "Bosch" running for over a decade and "Reacher" contemplating a spin-off, "Jø Nesbo's Detective Hole" looks set to establish itself as another long-standing favorite in the genre. Fans can now stream "Jø Nesbo's Detective Hole" on Netflix.
