Netflix Shakes Up Oscars with Sequel Announcement for Its Biggest Hit!

Netflix has officially confirmed that a highly anticipated sequel to the globally popular film, KPop Demon Hunters, is currently in the works. This announcement comes after much speculation regarding the future of the breakout hit. Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the original writers and directors, are set to return to helm the next chapter. The film will once again be produced by Sony Pictures Animation, and notably, this marks the first project under Kang and Appelhans’ new exclusive multi-year writing and directing partnership with Netflix Animation, signaling a significant vote of confidence in their creative vision.

The original KPop Demon Hunters featured a talented voice cast, including Arden Cho as Rumi, May Hong as Mira, and Ji-young Yoo as Zoey. Other key cast members included Ahn Hyo-seop as Jinu, Yunjin Kim as Celine, Daniel Dae Kim as Healer Han, Ken Jeong as Bobby, and Lee Byung-hun as Gwi-Ma. Their performances contributed significantly to the film's success and global appeal.

Both directors expressed their enthusiasm for the upcoming project. Maggie Kang stated her immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that audiences are eager for more of this Korean story and its characters, emphasizing that there is much more to explore within the world they have built. Chris Appelhans echoed this sentiment, describing the characters as family and their world as a second home. He highlighted their excitement to write the next chapter, challenge the characters, and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and storytelling can intertwine.

The original KPop Demon Hunters has been a monumental success for Netflix. Back in August, it was confirmed to be the streaming giant's most popular film of all time, surpassing Red Notice with over 236 million views at that point. Its popularity has only continued to grow, with Netflix consistently spotlighting it as one of its biggest original triumphs. The film’s critical acclaim has also been significant, making it a major animated awards contender. It received nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden” at the Oscars, where it was widely considered a favorite to win Animated Feature. Prior to the Oscars, KPop Demon Hunters had already secured wins for Best Motion Picture – Animated at the Golden Globes and Best Animated Feature at the Critics' Choice Awards, building strong momentum for its awards season run. KPop Demon Hunters is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
