Netflix Shakes Up Leadership: Film Chief Dan Lin Exits Amid Speculation
Dan Lin has been dismissed as Netflix's head of film after nearly three years, a move occurring amidst widespread layoffs and a major creative restructuring at the streaming company. His exit follows the firing of chief content officer Bela Bajaria and precedes a speculated replacement by former Warner Bros. executives Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy.
Dan Lin has been dismissed as Netflix’s head of film after nearly three years, a significant development that follows a major restructuring and recent layoffs at the streaming giant.
His ouster occurred at the start of the weekend, with plans for him to address his teams on Monday.
This dismissal comes in the wake of a substantial reduction in force last week, which saw approximately 1,000 employees laid off, culminating in the surprising termination of chief content officer Bela Bajaria.
Netflix is currently undergoing a substantial creative restructuring, prompted by several months of reports detailing engagement issues and stock stagnation, exacerbated by its unsuccessful bid for Warner Bros.
As part of this overhaul,Peter Rice, a seasoned film and TV executive, has been hired to succeed Bela Bajaria.
The days immediately preceding Lin’s departure also saw layoffs affecting key members of his team, including Doug Belgrad and Sheroum Kim, the head of indie film for the vertical.
The question of Lin’s replacement remains open, though an announcement is anticipated in the coming days.
Industry speculation widely suggests that Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, who previously led the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, are in discussions with Netflix regarding a potential role within the company.
Lin’s appointment to the top Netflix film position had garnered considerable attention in 2024. He arrived at Netflix as an accomplished producer, having built a successful independent production company, Rideback.
Rideback is renowned for its work on major franchises such as the animated “Lego” films, adaptations of Stephen King’s “It,” and the popular “Sherlock Holmes” movie series. He transitioned to Netflix to fill the role previously held by longtime film lead Scott Stuber.
During his tenure, as revealed in a June interview with The New York Times, Lin stated he had greenlit or acquired 88 movies for Netflix. Notable projects under his leadership included “Apex,” “Emelia Perez,” “Here Comes the Flood,” and “The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.”
