A Decade Later, Netflix Deletes Its Most Review-Bombed Movie

Review-bombing, often driven by sexism, has become a big problem in movies and TV.
But shows and films with diverse casts or LGBTQ+ stories, like Captain Marvel, Star Wars: The Acolyte, and The Last of Us, have faced angry backlash from some fans.
This isn’t new. It started over 15 years ago and got worse about 10 years later.
For example, in 2008, fans tried to lower The Dark Knight’s Rotten Tomatoes score by attacking critics and even with new rules to stop it, review-bombing keeps happening.
The movie in question is the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, which was headlined by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Chris Hemsworth.
Directed by Paul Feig, the movie earned positive reviews from critics and it currently holds a "Certified Fresh" 76% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
But it was dismissed by audiences predisposed to disliking it.
The website's consensus reads,
"Ghostbusters does an impressive job of standing on its own as a freewheeling, marvelously cast supernatural comedy or even if it can't help but pale somewhat in comparison with the classic original."
The film underperformed, grossing less than $230 million worldwide against a reported budget exceeding $150 million.
However, it held a significantly lower 49% audience score on the platform.
Both subsequent films achieved better box office success, grossing over $200 million worldwide each, with budgets less than half of the 2016 reboot's.
Meanwhile, Paul Feig, the director of the 2016 film, went on to deliver a significant hit with the psychological thriller *The Housemaid*, which grossed nearly $400 million worldwide.
The 2016 *Ghostbusters* was available on Netflix until March 29.
