NDC's Yakubu Abanga slams AG's EOCO referral over galamsey claims

The 3rd Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yakubu Abanga, has strongly criticised the Attorney General's decision to refer him to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) for investigation over alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.

In a phone interview with Adom TV, Abanga admitted to owning a concession but clarified, “I have a concession, but as we speak, I’m not working.”

He explained that due to the nature of the business, he could not disclose details about the directors and associates involved with the concession.

Abanga dismissed the allegations as unfounded and premature, describing the Attorney General's action as “rushed.”

“I practice legal mining. I don’t want to go into too much detail. My main focus, both as a government representative and as a member of the NDC, is to create jobs for the youth. As a licensed small-scale miner, I’m committed to promoting transparency and best practices in the mining sector, not the opposite,”

He said this via a post shared by Sikaofficial on X (formerly Twitter) on July 16, 2025.

He reiterated that although he owns a concession, it is currently inactive, distancing himself from the accusations.

Commenting on suggestions that he was acting in concert with other political figures, Abanga stated, “The Attorney General mentioned that Joseph Yamin and I know what we’re doing. But the truth is, I haven’t spoken to Hon. Yamin in several days. The last time I saw him was in Ablekuma North, and we had no conversation related to mining.”
