AG Expands EOCO Galamsey Probe to Include Frimpong-Boateng Report Findings | News Ghana

Attorney General Dr Dominic Ayine

The July 15, 2025, directive mandates EOCO to collaborate with the Minerals Commission and examine all individuals implicated in the report, regardless of political affiliation.

This expansion follows EOCO’s existing probe into NDC officials Joseph Yammin and Yakubu Abanga over alleged rogue anti-galamsey activities. Dr. Ayine’s letter specifically cites the need for “special attention” to evidence and recommendations within former Environment Minister Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s landmark report on illegal mining networks. The Minerals Commission CEO will provide regulatory expertise to support the investigation.

The move aligns with President Mahama’s “Reset Agenda” for natural resource governance, announced days after his declaration of galamsey as a “national emergency.” EOCO must prioritize the probe under the EOCO Act (2010), signaling intensified enforcement against mining-related corruption.

No timeline was specified, but the AG’s office emphasized urgency. The Frimpong-Boateng report previously documented systemic failures in combating illegal mining, including alleged involvement of state officials. Its integration into EOCO’s active cases marks a significant escalation in the government’s anti-galamsey strategy.
