NDC, NPP MPs react to death of Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi
Ghana’s legislative arm of government has been hit by the demise of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Ernest Yaw Kumi.
The Akwatia legislator’s death, which was reported on Monday, July 7, 2025, has shaken his colleagues on both the Majority and Minority Caucuses of the House.
Members of Parliament, during proceedings in the House on Monday, paid their last respects to their fallen colleague.
Members from both sides of the House took turns to express their sympathies to the family of the deceased.
A minute of silence was observed by the MPs in honour of the late Ernest Kumi before the sitting was adjourned.
A number of MPs also took to social media to express their dismay and disbelief as they mourn the late Ernest Kumi.
Among them is the MP for Okaikwei Central, Dr Patrick Yaw Boamah, an NPP legislator, who said he was shocked by the death of the Akwatia MP.
“Deeply saddened by the shocking demise of a colleague, Hon. Ernest Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, this afternoon. My heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, friends, and the New Patriotic Party. May his memory forever shine in our hearts,” Dr Boamah wrote.
The MP for South Dayi and Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, also wrote, “Hon. Ernest Kumi, Fare thee well, my brother. You were on the other side, but you were warm, full of life and very active in the Chamber and its work. Death, be not proud…”
“Deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Hon. Ernest Kumi, MP for Akwatia. His dedication to public service and commitment to his constituents will be remembered. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, and the people of Akwatia. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” wrote the MP for Asunafo North.
Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Minority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri, said the death of Ernest Kumi was “Difficult to bear!” adding, “May the Lord keep you, my brother; Hon. Ernest Kumi! Deep condolences to the family and the entire Caucus.”
