Navigating Mumbai's Air Quality with Asthma

On World Asthma Day 2025, Mumbaikars are sharing strategies for navigating the city's rising Air Quality Index (AQI) levels. The increasing dust particles from construction, debris, and traffic have contributed to a rise in respiratory illnesses throughout the city. A four-year study indicated that Mumbaikars consistently breathe air with PM10 levels above the national safety threshold.
Tejasvi Momaya, a 33-year-old resident of Thane, finds relief through the use of an air purifier at home and occasional breaks from the city in the hills. Radhika Bhatia, 29, focuses on self-care and adapting by limiting her commutes and always wearing a mask, opting for travel by car or cab.
Hitarthi Pandya has created a travel kit that includes double-masks, a nebulizer, and medication to manage her condition effectively. She also emphasizes the importance of diet in reducing inflammation, avoiding foods that cause bloating or overeating.
Dr. Sundeep Mestri, a pulmonologist at MGM New Bombay Hospital in Vashi, highlights the significance of early medical treatment to prevent viral and bacterial infections. He recommends regular respiratory exercises.
Additional tips for managing asthma in Mumbai's environment include double-masking when going out, regular steam inhalation and somatic exercises, and avoiding dusty places while limiting commuting to essential trips.
