National Farmers' Day Frenzy: Volta Region Readies to Host, ADB & Japan Motors Fuel Festivities!

Ghana hosted its 41st National Farmers' Day celebration from December 1 to December 5, 2025, with the main national event taking place in Ho, Volta Region. This annual celebration, themed "Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future," served as a pivotal occasion to honor the nation's dedicated farmers and fisherfolk and to reinforce the government's commitment to positioning agriculture as the primary engine for economic revival and national food security.
Volta Regional Minister James Gunu emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama's administration views agriculture not merely as a sector to support, but as the core driver of the country's economic resetting agenda. This strategy is built upon three critical pillars: productivity, innovation, and resilience. Mr. Gunu highlighted the Volta Region's significant role as a national powerhouse in food production, leading in rice cultivation, aquaculture, cassava processing, vegetable farming, and animal husbandry. This regional success story is central to the broader Volta Economic Corridor initiative, an ambitious project aimed at revolutionizing agriculture, agro-processing, logistics, and export capabilities, thereby transforming the agricultural landscape and creating new opportunities.
The Agricultural Development Bank PLC (ADB) was a prominent sponsor, hosting its annual National Farmers’ Cocktail on Monday, December 1, 2025, in Ho. This event welcomed and honored the National Best Farmers and Fishers who excelled in various categories. Professor Ferdinand Ahiakpor, Deputy Managing Director of ADB, speaking on behalf of the bank’s Managing Director, congratulated the nominees and underscored ADB’s strong resolve to support national efforts towards food security. He highlighted the bank’s goal to intensify investments in climate-resilient farming, agro-industrial supply chains, and youth employment within the sector. ADB's substantial sponsorship included the ultimate prize of GHS 1.2 million cash for the National Best Farmer, a GH¢200,000 award for the National Best Fisher, and an additional GH¢50,000 for the Best Second Cycle School in practical agriculture. The bank also sponsors the National Farmers’ Day Forum and the Welcome Cocktail, reaffirming its long-standing commitment and original mandate to the agricultural sector.
Japan Motors Trading Company Ltd. (JMTC) also demonstrated its strong support by donating essential equipment to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFAD). In line with the event's theme, Japan Motors presented MoFA with two YAMAHA motorcycles and two Yamaha generators to facilitate field operations and monitoring, crucial for national food security. Concurrently, MoFAD received one YAMAHA motorcycle, one Yamaha 40HP outboard motor, and a Yamaha water pump to enhance the Ministry’s outreach and coastal operations. Mr. Abdul-Somad Alhassan Musah, Assistant Managing Director of Japan Motors, reiterated the company’s commitment to sustainable agriculture, fisheries development, and improved livelihoods nationwide, emphasizing their long-standing relationship with both sectors.
The celebration also brought into focus the challenges faced by the fisheries and aquaculture sector, which Minister Emelia Arthur, represented by Chief Director Marian Kpakpa, described as a cornerstone of the country's food system, providing nearly 60 percent of the animal protein consumed by Ghanaians. Despite issues such as escalating costs, the devastating impacts of climate change, and significant post-harvest losses, the resilience and dedication of fisherfolk were highly praised. In response, the government has launched comprehensive reforms, including strengthening the Fisheries Management Act, expanding aquaculture zones, improving premixed fuel governance, and investing in modern landing site infrastructure. Paramount Chief of the Battor Traditional Area, Togbega Patamia Dzekle VII, issued a timely call for comprehensive mechanisms to protect against environmental degradation, emphasizing that sustainable practices are essential for long-term food security. This message resonated with the government's stated commitment to climate-smart agriculture and responsible stewardship of natural resources.
The event served as a crucial platform for networking among diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, executives, financiers, and farmers, all united in the shared responsibility of securing Ghana's food future and driving its economic transformation.
