Music World Mourns: 'Greatest Bassist' Mani Remembered by Legends, Oasis Pays Heartfelt Tribute!

The music world is mourning the passing of Manchester music icon Gary 'Mani' Mounfield, who died on Thursday, November 20, at the age of 63. The sad news was announced by his brother Greg on Facebook, prompting an immediate outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians and fans worldwide. Mani, a beloved figure known for his distinctive bass playing, rose to prominence as the bassist for The Stone Roses before later joining Primal Scream.
Mounfield's musical journey began when he joined The Stone Roses in the 1980s, contributing to both of the band's influential albums. He remained a crucial part of the foursome until their disbandment in 1996. Following this, he became a member of Primal Scream, continuing to showcase his unique talent. In 2011, Mani announced his departure from Primal Scream to participate in The Stone Roses' highly anticipated reunion tour, bringing joy to countless fans.
Beyond his prolific music career, Mani was a cherished individual. His passing comes almost two years after he lost his wife, Imelda, to cancer, a personal milestone he had recently acknowledged on social media. Just last week, the 63-year-old had shared plans for a UK-wide speaking tour scheduled for late 2026 and early 2027. In his announcement, he stated his intention to share his "skewed vision of my own life," emphasizing he would "never rat on my comrades."
Tributes have flooded in from across the music industry and beyond, reflecting the immense respect and affection Mani commanded. Oasis, during the Sao Paulo stop of their Live '25 tour on November 23, paid a touching tribute. During their performance of 'Live Forever,' an enormous photo of Mani was displayed on the central screen. Band members turned to face the image, with Liam Gallagher blowing a kiss and applauding. According to a fan, Liam also subtly changed the lyrics from 'we're gonna live forever' to 'you're gonna live forever' in another heartfelt gesture. Earlier in the show, The Verve's Richard Ashcroft also honored Mani by playing the bass intro of 'She Bangs the Drums' during his set. Noel Gallagher shared his own tribute on X, writing, "R.I.P brother - it was a pleasure to have known you," alongside a photo.
Liam Gallagher, deeply affected by the news, had previously described Mani as "my hero," expressing his total shock and devastation. The official Stone Roses account on X posted, "RIP our wonderful brother Mani. The greatest bass player and friend we could ever have wished for." Stone Roses singer Ian Brown simply wrote, "REST IN PEACE MANi X." Paul Weller hailed him as "a true one-off." Richard Ashcroft further praised Mani as "one of the loveliest positive musicians to spend time with," recognizing him as "a key element to the band that inspired me to believe I could do this music thing," and highlighting his "style, swagger, and sound, but most importantly a warm heart."
Other notable tributes included Liam Fray of The Courteeners, who was "absolutely devastated" and said, "This is what true sadness feels feels like. Everyone who knew you will miss you so much." The Charlatans' lead singer, Tim Burgess, re-posted a picture of them together from Mani's 63rd birthday, calling him "One of the absolute best in every way. Such a beautiful friend." Bury band Elbow shared a poignant message: "Mani was our hero. Then he was our mate. He always used your name a lot when talking to you... And he had the best stories because he forgot nothing. He never stopped being our hero. Never will." Simone Butler, who succeeded Mani in Primal Scream, praised his "brilliant and wickedly sharp sense of humour and the biggest heart and generosity," adding, "the moment u met Mani u loved him." Manchester-based music publicist and friend, Liam Walsh, noted, "His legacy will live on forever," after hearing The Stone Roses' 'Fools Gold' playing, highlighting Mani's enduring impact.
