Music Industry Under Fire: Canice Igwe Claims Nigeria's Scene Stifles Creativity

Rising music sensation Canice Igwe has voiced significant concerns regarding the current state of the Nigerian music industry. According to Igwe, the industry is heavily influenced by conventional norms and standards, a structure he believes actively stifles creativity and diversity in musical expression. This environment, he argues, makes it exceedingly difficult for artists to fully explore and showcase their unique sonic identities.
In a candid interview with LEADERSHIP Weekend, Canice Igwe reiterated his unwavering commitment to forging a distinct musical identity, one that purposefully diverges from prevailing mainstream trends and the prevalent "bandwagon mentality." He firmly believes that authentic artistry requires time to genuinely connect with and resonate among audiences. Consequently, he is determined to capture the hearts of his listeners through sincere self-expression and persistent effort, rather than conforming to fleeting popular demands.
While refusing to be limited by a single genre, Canice Igwe confidently embraces Afrofusion. This versatile musical style is characterized by its seamless integration of traditional African rhythms with contemporary influences, allowing for a rich and dynamic sound. His academic background, having graduated in theatre and film from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), provides a unique foundation for his artistic approach. This education enables him to combine his strong vocal abilities with a captivating performance style, consistently leaving audiences spellbound.
Following the critical acclaim of his debut project, “God or Money,” which effectively showcased his diverse talents, Igwe is now gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated upcoming album, “Out the Ghetto.” This album is described as a profoundly personal artistic journey, reflecting the evolution of his music from a broader worldview to a more intricate exploration of spiritual perspectives. Fans can look forward to a new single from this album, titled “Fear Love,” which promises to further illustrate his artistic development and deepen his connection with listeners through heartfelt lyrics and innovative soundscapes. Canice Igwe has also previously made notable waves with his tracks “Cash App” and “My Brother.”
Expressing his core philosophy, Igwe stated, “I don’t write music for recognition but rather to share my life and the problems I’ve experienced with the hope that the listener will learn from me and have a better future. I want my art and voice to be recognised as an instrument for change in our society.” He also revealed his collaboration with a team of like-minded individuals who share a passion for driving change within both the film and music industries. Together, they operate a media house named “Think Digital Services,” which specializes in providing digital and audio-visual services designed to encourage critical thinking among their audience. Through their creative endeavors, they aim to "carve the future with what we create today."
